Charlie Christian Featuring Andy Aledort Review

Charlie Christian Featuring Andy AledortThis DVD is an amazing instructional tool for learning how to play some of Charlie's music. It is better than the other things I have seen in the Signature Licks DVD series. At first I was concerned that there is no tab booklet with this dvd, but Andy is such a great instructor that I soon realized you really don't need it, and it would probably just be a distraction from the real instruction available here if it was included. Andy plays each head, explains the structure of the song, shows in slow motion what is going on, suggests some theoretical analysis of Charlie's approach, and plays each segment up to speed. He then shows how to play several solos for each piece. You get the Head, solos and strucure for each piece broken down and also in full speed.

Before I bought this DVD I was concerned that he could not thoroughly cover each song on one DVD, as was the case on other DVD's I have seen in this series, but somehow he really does it here. You can really learn all eight songs (Air Mail Special * Benny's Bugle * Gone with "What" Wind * Grand Slam * Seven Come Eleven * Shivers * Solo Flight * Till Tom Special.) at a performance level entirely from this one CD.

Andy's ability to explain the essence of each lick is truly amazing and very effective. The pedagogy here does expect an intermmediate ability. Andy makes theoretical reference to basic song structure and chord construction with out going into a long winded explanation of the theory behind it, but it is all pretty basic. If you can understand what the I, V, VI, and II chords are in the key of F, C and B-flat, and know the difference between a major and minor third, you will have more than enough theory to follow along with no problem. If you want to learn Charlie's style or just want to learn how lead guitar was approached by the guy who invented it, all from one of the best guitar teachers you could ever find, then this DVD is for you!

Adam Kadmon: Guitar Grimoire - Scales and Modes (2008) Review

Adam Kadmon: Guitar Grimoire - Scales and ModesI was a bit skeptical of this video at the start, due to the korny wizard and imagery. However, once I got into the lessons I was very impressed with how simple and visual he made scales and modes seem. Alot of the information was related initially to the piano, which made it much easier to understand. Once he applied it to the guitar, it all made so much sense. I would say that this is a great companion to the book, however if you don't want to spend another $20 on the book, you really don't need it, the video does explain everything. The only advantage the book gives is that itcreates fretboard maps for every key, but if you really know the material you should be able to create your own and would probably benefit much more from doing it. Overall, great video if you can get over the korny wizard.

Be aware, he does go into some really exotic scales... too me it was just confusing since I'll never use them anyway, but I gotta give him credit for being thorough. The explanation of the pentatonic, major, melodic minor and harmonic scales and their associated modes is all I need and thought he did an outstanding job in simplifying it!!

Johnny Hiland: Chicken Pickin' Guitar Review

Johnny Hiland: Chicken Pickin' GuitarJohnny's a great player, evidenced by some of the great live playing that is captured in the studio on this disc. He's also a really good teacher who takes the time to explain things and slow them down for you. I'm a fan of this style of music and if I compare this to the Brent Mason Nashville Chops video, which is also good, it's clear that though Johnny and Brent are both world class players, Johnny's a much better instructor.I'd highly recommend this to anyone who likes the chicken picken' style.

Bonus footage of Arlen jamming with Johnny --and with Danny Gatton's old bandmates in the rhythm section!

Best of the Allman Brothers Band - Signature Licks DVD Review

Best of the Allman Brothers Band - Signature Licks DVDAfter reading the other reviews, I have to wonder if people place orders without ever reading the contents or doing additional review research. This is an "instructional" DVD and not a concert and at no time was I confused or misled to think otherwise.

That being said, the title does lead one to think it is a best of concert but I don't think it was intentional. As a long time guitar player and fan of The Allman Brother Band, I purchased this "instructional" DVD with the intent of saving me time in working out parts, especially long lead parts of some of the ABB's signature material.

I am very pleased with the careful and well executed presentation and didn't expect the instructor to think for me as it takes effort to learn such material. This DVD was patiently assembled with clear shots of the fretboard and clear instructions from the instructor. The audio and tone is excellent and if you desire to learn this type of material, either for personal enjoyment or to save you time in preparation for performing in a band, you will be pleased. A new level of appreciation for the complexity and unique beauty of the original music might also occur, if it hasn't already.

Non musician/guitarists would probably not enjoy this unless you are a real hardcore fan of The Allman Brothers Band, specifically the guitar parts. This is music disassembled and reconstructed for the clear purpose of instruction.

A job well done and so far not equaled. Worth every penny !

Roger McGuinn's Guide To Home Recording on a Computer Review

Roger McGuinn's Guide To Home Recording on a ComputerThis DVD is for somebody first considering the plunge into digital recording, or somebody who's already bought multitrack software and found it daunting. (That's me.) Don't buy this DVD if you're Jeff Lynne, or if you think you are.

After a snappy and promising introduction, McGuinn fires up the Cool Edit Pro program, picks up his signature Martin 12-string, and lays down a rhythm track. It takes three minutes and change, and we watch the whole thing, with extended close-ups of his picking hand, his chording hand, and Cool Edit Pro counting milliseconds one by one. A thousand things McGuinn can play warrant this sort of inspection, but not the simple guitar part to the lovely "May the Road Rise to Meet You", and one wonders what the editor was thinking. Happily this is the only substantial misstep.

The training session regains its rhythm as McGuinn layers vocal tracks, and what is more interesting, makes a mistake. He expertly chops a few words of a flubbed lyric out of one track and creates a new track segment with the right words, all in a matter of seconds. The result is seamless.

All with speed that will surprise those who haven't seen this sort of thing before, McGuinn records tracks, adds reverb, deletes noise, creates fades, and mixes the song down to stereo.

Along the way we get an excellent tour of his hardware and software, all available off the shelf with the exception Cool Edit Pro, which became Adobe Audition a couple of years ago. However, everything he says about Cool Edit Pro seems to apply to the current Audition.

While we do not again sit through the playing of a full track after that first one, I would've been happy to hear the finished multitrack song polished to McGuinn's satisfaction.

A promotional piece for Dell included as a bonus covers much of the same ground, and serves to show what the DVD could have been with more able and assertive editing and direction.

But any quibbles about the production are outweighed by the quantity of information it conveys. The second time you watch this, you'll want to take notes.

Product Description:
A few years ago, Roger McGuinn made a CD called "Treasures from the Folk Den." He traveled the country, recording classic songs on location with folk legends such as Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Josh White, Jr. and Odetta, among others. The resulting CD, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Traditional Folk Album, was made entirely on his laptop!
Roger has since become a major advocate of multi-track recording on a basic home computer set-up. On this DVD, he shares what he has learned about making CDs with beginners who would like to make their own home recordings this way. Using his compelling song "May the Road Rise" (co-written with his wife, Camilla McGuinn) as an example, he replicates the process by which he records a song from conception to final product. He demonstrates, step-by-step, how he lays down the basic tracks, overdubs his vocals, adds harmonies and guitar riffs, doubles the parts and comes up with a complete recording with his trademark vocal and guitar sound. Finally, you1ll see how Roger mixes the result to a two-track stereo file and burns it to a CD.
Roger's equipment set-up, ideas about mic placement, advice on how to back up your project, and other tips will get you started recording your own songs on your computer.BONUS: An interview with Roger, made for Dell Computers, in which he talks about his background, musical ideas and enthusiasm for the possibilities inherent in home computer recording.

Jim Hall (2005) Review

Jim HallThis DVD was very interesting. I thought I was getting a concert - but what I got was a mini concert with instructional filler between each groove. Jim Hall is a gentle genius. He's very melodic and adds complicated arpeggios around each melodic line. This is what makes Mr. Hall one of a kind. He doesn't give us a lot of scales andmodes between each line - he doesn't slap you w/ a barrage of notes. You get the melody with a few thrills. His choice of notes is what makes him unique. Anyway, I thought I was getting a concert, but Mr. Hall stops between each groove and tells you what he did in each song - step by step. For example: I played a G minor here and a C7 there. I found using the remote to fast forward the filler helps. All I wanted to do was relax and hear Mr. Hall play. As you can see, I gave Mr. Hall five stars, anyway. His music is one of a kind.

Guitar Hanon (Private Lessons / Musicians Institute) [Paperback] Review

Guitar Hanon [Paperback]ok.. i'm not a big fan of this book, but I do feel the other reviews have missed the purpose of the book.as to the guy who said that Speed Mechanics was a better book -- Maybe, butyou'recomparing apples and oranges.his book isn't meant to be a course in shred guitar. The author states that once you have masterd it, you will have dramtically improved the strength and independence of your fretting hand; and speed and coordination of your picking hand.I cannot verify the accuracy of that statement, since I have not mastered the book.

My complaint is that there is no instruction on how to use the lessons in the book.Yes one does need to have some basic sight reading skills. But come on people!MG! You are trying to become musicians, right? If you need help here, get Music Reading for the Guitar by david oakes.while I could not be a session player from using it, it did give me the ability to read the simple "melody" lines in this book and figure out transcriptions to songs. You can't rely on tabs for the rest of your life!Plus they completely suck for giving the rhythm of a piece.
OK , back to this boook. When I first got it I could not figure out how to use it. OK... I'm an idiot maybe. But it has page after page of melody lines you are to work on.each line has Roman numerals above the first barand a series of numbers 1 -4 unedr each note beneath the staff.I've finally figured out (I think) that the Romannumerals are the position(fret numbers) you are to play the piece in, and the arabic numbers 1-4 are the fingers to use for that particular note. It seems obvious now, but a simple explanation would have helped and also given me assurance that I am correct. I haven't startd using it yet since I have so many other freaking books to work through, but it does appear to require a good deal of disipline to get through (or apparently to even get started).I do plan to use it though since it's supposed to help with finger independence and the 3rd and 4th fingers on my left hand seem to be glued together.Hope that helps!

Songxpress - Modern Rock for Guitar, Vol. 1 (1999) Review

Songxpress - Modern Rock for Guitar, Vol. 1This video is well done overall. The instructor explains things clearly from tuning the guitar to how to hold the chords. However, the strumming hand is often ignored. This video only teaches the rhythm parts of the songs. It doesn't include the fills or solos. That's why I think it's better for beginners. The quality is great compared to another dvd i bought from another company which was basically like an old vhs version transferred to dvd.

Metallica: Guitar Legendary Licks 1988-1997 Review

Metallica: Guitar Legendary Licks 1988-1997I bought this DVD thinking that the instructor teaches the entire song.Wrong! While the instructor breaks down solos and riffs which makes it incredibly easy for people to play, only fractions of the song is explained.
I guess it's cool to be able to play signature riffs and solos, but I'd like to learn how to play the entire song.Only being able to play like a minute out of 6 minute Metallica song isn't worth buying a $20 DVD.
And the fact that the instructor does a wonderful job of explaining makes it worse. With his instructions, I could be playing any Metallica songs in no time (both James' and Kirk's parts)But, that's not the case here.It would've been the perfect way to learn hard Metallica songs.. but they stopped way way short of accomplishing that goal.

Basic Blues Guitar: Essential Progressions, Patterns and Styles (Private Lessons / Musicians Institute) [Paperback] Review

Basic Blues Guitar: Essential Progressions, Patterns and Styles [Paperback]This is a very basic book. The lessons are simple, and even a pure beginner can start playing basic blues rhythms within a short time.I feel it necessary to emphasize that a beginning guitar student should NOT start with this book.A beginner should learn fundamentals prior to cracking this book open: fundamentals like open position chords, basic strumming patterns, and bar chords.

Although I wouldn't call it comprehensive, the book covers various blues styles: 12-bar blues shuffle, Chuck Berry style, minor blues, BB King big band blues, Kansas City style, 8-bar, slow blues, etc...There are a lot of examples. The book covers 7th chords, 9th chords and introduces 13th chords. There are a lot of practice tracts for 7th and 9th chords. There are also some single note rhythms.

The book is accompanied by a CD with 40 play along tracks that go along with each lesson.

All in all, it is a good introduction to basic blues guitar playing.I highly recommend it for beginning guitarists. An intermediate guitarist probably won't find anything in this book to be very challenging, but nevertheless it would still be a good introduction to blues.

Guitar Method: In the Style of Greatest Metal Riffs of the 80's Review

Guitar Method: In the Style of Greatest Metal Riffs of the 80'sOver all, I prefer the In the style series over the SongXpress series. In the style is much closer to the real versions of the artists songs. But SongXpress is much easier to learn from, because they really simplify the song compared to the original.I think they could have put a few more riffs in this video. However, overall this isn't bad if you want to learn a few quick riffs to impress your friends. The main reason I did not give this product more stars is the scrolling tab is very difficult to see as each note is covered by stars, circles, and squares of different colors making the numbers difficult to read unless you get really close to the screen. the other products I have bought from this line did not have this problem.I have no idea why they thought of doing this.
