SongXpress: Modern Rock, Vol. 4 - For Acoustic or Electric Guitar Review

SongXpress: Modern Rock, Vol. 4 - For Acoustic or Electric GuitarI purchased this product after recently learning to play the guitar. I found the teaching to play these songs very simple and easy to understand. However, you must know your chords before buying this DVD as they do not teach you how to play the chord, but instead which chords to play to make up the song. I only learnt the first two songs...

Easy Fingerpicking Favorites Review

Easy Fingerpicking FavoritesThis is a great DVD to simply learn the songs. Happy Traum is a natural teacher who moves slowly, anticipates the difficult parts, encourages you to pause the DVD and practice, and brings you along to learning some great fingerpicking favorites. He is a master player and a patient teacher.Homespun's production is clear, up close, and uses two cameras to help you see clearly the right and left hand. This DVD is a lot of fun and I use it as part of a "course" of learning to fingerpick.See other titles by Traum, especially "Easy Steps to Guitar Fingerpicking" Volumes 1 and 2.Here also, he takes the student on a journey, and skillfully works like a builder, setting a good foundation, and then putting one stone upon another. But along the journey, you find you learn songs, which is encouraging, only to learn later, how much fun it is to take those songs you've learned, and begin to "dress them up" with some of Happy's tricks of the trade.Another great DVD from Homsepun.

Learn to play five easy songs that should be in every fingerpicker's repertoire: "Railroad Bill," "My Creole Belle," "Cocaine Blues," "Freight Train," "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor."
Happy plays each tune in its simplest form, then moves the appropriate notes off the beat (while the bass maintains its steady, on-the-beat rhythm) so you can clearly understand where the syncopated notes go. Finally, you'll add important techniques-hammer-ons, pull-offs, bass runs, jump notes, walk-ups, turnarounds-to make all your playing come alive. You'll soon be ready to create your own arrangements to any fingerpicking tune!

Advanced Rock Rhythm Guitar Review

Advanced Rock Rhythm GuitarThis was one of the worse instructional DVD or tapes I have ever bought, and I have at least 40. I thought I was getting a "rock" instructional tape and it was everything but. One lesson was a spanish melody in which he suggest it has rock sounds. It doesn't. I was waiting for some bull fight to take place! He does another little riff and says it's a Jimmi Hendrix sound. Ah, NO ITS NOT!! It's not a good instructional tape period!

DVD-The Songs and Guitar of Ramblin' Jack Elliott Review

DVD-The Songs and Guitar of Ramblin' Jack ElliottThis video is a great deal of fun. If, like myself, you've always loved Jack Elliott's delivery and his stories, you'll probably get a kick out of the repartee between him and Arlo Guthrie. If, like myself, you're buying this to actually learn the guitar technique of Jack Elliott, you will probably be less satisfied. There is not much time spent on explaining fingerings, runs, or chord shapes. That said, Elliott is not exactly Blind Blake. You certainly can learn renditions of most of these songs from this video. But if you're hoping to be spoon-fed the secrets that give Jack Elliott's guitar work it's unique twists, you'd do as well to get CDs, put your head against the speakers and go over each song note for note. Jack is not very forthcoming about what he does or how he does it. Certainly one of the best exponents of Woody Guthrie's 'pendulum picking' style, not to mention the complex flatpicking 'talking blues' structure. Elliott does not 'teach' these techniques which I was very much hoping to learn from this video. He demonstrates these techniques, but he doesn't slow them down. He doesn't break them into small patterns and reassemble them so you can duplicate what he does. In other words, if you're already a fine player, maybe you can make use of these demonstrations at tempo and figure them out. But if you're a beginner, you're going to be just as puzzled at the end of your third viewing of Talking Sailor as you were at the first. The tabulature, too, is rudimentary. It's the tab for the song, not exactly the rendition that Elliott is playing on the video and not all parts are tabbed. In other words, you can develop a rendition of these songs from this tab, but unless you're pretty skilled, it will be your rendition, having little in common with Elliott's arrangement except the key. No one I'm aware of has ever done a serious video lesson on this style of Oklahoma Dustbowl guitar. Such a lesson would be very valuable. Unfortunately, this is not it. The best advice on the DVD comes close to the end when Elliott tells the viewer "Don't take yourself too seriously."

Guitar Method: In the Style of Jimi Hendrix Review

Guitar Method: In the Style of Jimi HendrixInstead of a simple, "this sucks, don't buy it" type of review I will give a detailed criticism in the hope that, "MVP Home Video" and similar companies will read my critique and produce instructional material of better quality.

This DVD staring Curt Mitchell is an attempt to teach the viewer how to play in the style of rock guitar virtuosos and genius, Jimi Hendrix. It falls very short of its goal, in fact it hardly teaches anything.

The DVD cover promises, "full band and rhythm trax for solo practice."THIS DVD CONTAINS NO SUCH THING!There is no play-along on this DVD. A play-along , or music minus one, a la Jamey Abersold would be a great tool to the person playing by himself to practice with. This is a clear example of false advertising, MVP Home Video should feel ashamed.

The DVD cover promises, "amp and effect settings", indeed this is not covered in the DVD.Curt explains that he does not have the same effect pedals as Hendrix used, instead he uses modern Boss pedals. This is okay because few people can afford the vintage pedals used by Jimi, however, no settings are described or even shown.Every song is played with distortion including, "The Wind Cries Mary", "Little Wing", and "Castles made of Sand."The infamous Octava and Univibe are never mentioned, or used.Curt tells the viewer that Jimi rarely used the, "out of phase" setting on his guitar, apparently he knows very little about Jimi's recordings. That fact is, Hendrix was one of the first people to discover and use the, "out of phase" setting (listen to Little Wing).Instead of explaining to viewer Hendrix's guitar, amp, and effects set up Curt Mitchell recites a long soliloquy about scalloped finger boards, locking tremolo units, hummbucking pickups, graphite bridge saddles, and how he has Jaguar pickups on his Stat; all these things have nothing to do with Hendrix.

For this video Curt tunes down 1/2 step and he tells the view to do likewise. This is easier said than done for most guitarists.

The instructive lessons look like they were filmed in somebody's basement with an old VHS camcorder in SLP mode. The picture quality is very poor for a DVD product.Curt Mitchell seems fidgety and anxious as he rushes through his instruction. The DVD does not contain a booklet with the musical examples, nor is any tablature shown on the screen.Instead the tablature may be downloaded for FREE at, "www.MVPhomevideo.com" hey who needs to buy the DVD if the transcriptions to Jimi's songs are free.Isn't this a violation of copyright law?Curt plays 61 riffs and licks, they are played well, you can tell Curt is a decent guitarist. When each riff is played at normal speed, you can see the entire guitar and both of this hands, then Curt plays each example slowly.During the slow examples the camera shoots only a close-up of Curt's left hand. This is a major flaw, the viewer needs to see both hands in order to learn the example.Curt's transcriptions are not completely accurate, for example he plays "Manic Depression" in open position and, "Red House" in the key of A.The examples are short signature Hendrix phrases with no context, complete songs are not taught.

The back cover of the DVD states, "running time: approx 60 minutes" the video is only 40 minuets long.Basically what you are buying is a 40 minuet video ofman showing off, but not explaining, Jimi Hendrix's most beloved licks and riffs.

DVD-Arrangements For Solo Acoustic Guitar Review

DVD-Arrangements For Solo Acoustic GuitarDVD had some good tunes on it. I preferred the songs presented in the 2nd DVD by Peter Huttlinger in this series, due to the fact that it seemed to have a few more songs at the intermediate level of play. The instruction on this DVD was clear, organized and to the point. The written music notation and tablature was written in an easy to read manner. The paper music score provided with the DVD contained several songs and was small enough to easily fit into a guitar case. This DVD has songs that would be playable by advanced players and one or two songs that would be playable by an intermediate level player.

The fingerpicking style is one of the most popular and engaging ways of playing the guitar. It's especially good for song accompaniment, and has been favored by folk, blues and country pickers, especially singer-songwriters such as James Taylor, Paul Simon, Shawn Colvin and Nanci Griffith. This lesson de-mystifies the right-hand technique by breaking it down into patterns that can be learned quickly and easily. Once these are mastered, a world of wonderful sounds will be available on the guitar, and you'll be able to apply them to some all-time favorite folk and traditional songs such as "Nine Hundred Miles," "Red Apple Juice," "Railroad Bill" and "Pretty Peggy-O."

Advanced Rock Lead Guitar Review

Advanced Rock Lead GuitarThis DVD Starts off ok but fails to deliver any real insights into "advanced lead Guitar".The sound quality is poor which is really unexpected with a instructional video backed by a famous learning company.
The other imediate letdown is the type of lead examples that are given. The lead examples are shown over Santanna style rhythem backing tracks, then followed by another bad choice of 14th century greensleves.
The one highlite is the acoustic blues solo section which is the most relevent piece on this dvd.
There are just too many other good DVDS on this subject out there, and this one fails to capture any of the new lead styles that people would be hoping to achieve.
Some may like this aproach in teaching style but others will most likely be a little mad that this was listed as an advanced lead technique dvd to begin with.
Look around first before making a choice on this DVD but if you have had others in his series and like his teaching style then buy it.

Stanley Jordan-Instructional Guitar DVD Review

Stanley Jordan-Instructional Guitar DVDAs a guitar lifer, I enjoy learning new techniques. After seeing Stanley Jordan perform on a local TV morning show, then at a high-profile, yet intimate, jazz club in Seattle, I was amazed. Now to find this DVD, I guess I am truely enlightened;-)

This DVD covers not only his performance technique, but he discusses how he began and evolved his technique from childhhood. Mr. Jordan can be described as an artistic engineer of musical technique.

He discusses his guitar modifications, equipment flexibility, early invention attempts, and the origins of his playing style. He is a jazz-style virtuoso who can't resist throwing in licks from Hendrix & Page.

If you're a budding, or seasoned, guitar player who thinks the latest metal shredders are gods, buy this DVD ... then look more closely at your prior idols. Many of them acknowledge Jordan's influence. Breadth AND depth of talent (not just stage presence) is HERE.

DVD-Arrangements For Solo Acoustic Guitar #2 Review

DVD-Arrangements For Solo Acoustic Guitar #2If you are looking to see and hear one of the world's great guitar players up close, this is a good place to start. Huttlinger is one of those rare players whose incredible technique doesn't compromise the beauty and emotion of his music. Too often players with that much technique lose the plot but he uses his skill set to turn the guitar into a mini orchestra. He is also a fun character and even more fun in person.

I would say this DVD is good for anyone who loves guitar but it will be very useful for players who are at least at the intermediate level. The real payoff will be for more advanced players who will find a tresure chest of great ideas for making great music.

Pete Huttlinger continues his exploration of the guitar arrangements that have won him accolades throughout the acoustic guitar world - and a National Fingerstyle Championship! An engaging and accomplished instructor, Pete brings his spectacular playing to learning fingerstyle players with dramatic performance pieces that are as challenging as they are fun to learn.
Pete starts out by teaching his Merle Travis-inspired chord/melody arrangement of the great Gershwin tune I Got Rhythm. His exciting version features lightning-fast fingerpicking and a total left hand workout.
Things calm down a bit as you learn Pete's somewhat easier "Chet-style" fingerpicking tune Darcy's Guitar. Then you're off and running again, this time with an in-depth teaching of Pete's most requested tune, the showstopper, The Santa Rita Connection.
McGuire's Landing in DADGAD brings us back to a mellow Celtic mood. Tommy in the Morning, written by Pete for fellow fingerpicker Tommy Emmanuel, and the lovely hymn On Eagles' Wings, played in James Taylor's evocative style, round out this terrific DVD lesson.

Roger McGuinn's Basic Folk Guitar Review

Roger McGuinn's Basic Folk GuitarWhile McGuinn's artistry is excellent, this video's title is totally misleading - claiming "Basic" and "Easy arrangements" are totally untrue here. "Basic /easy" does not mean simultaneously flat picking and finger picking at 100 bpm. This isn't even structured as a learning video, its really a quick run through by an accomplished artist at full speed. A performance video for his fans perhaps but really not something a beginner could do. There's also some gratuitous shots of the peghead to let your know whose brand of guitar he's playing. If you have anything less than intermediate to advanced guitar skills you will be disappointed. Which is a shame because this publisher does put out some excellent learning tools (for example Steve Kaufman). Shame on them for misleading us on this one. Save your money !

Doc's Guitar- Fingerpicking & Flatpicking Review

Doc's Guitar- Fingerpicking & FlatpickingDoc Watson in my opinion is the greatest guitar player in the world, but this is an instruction video where you as a student are suppose to learn from the Master. You CAN learn from this video if you pay attention. It is not Doc's fault, the camera work isn't that great. The cameras a lot of times pick him up from the wrong angle so you don't know what he is doing. Thankfully he will slow it down and show you and the book of tabs is a tremedous help.
