Roots and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar: Acoustic Guitar Private Lessons (Acoustic Guitar Magazine's Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Roots and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar: Acoustic Guitar Private Lessons [Paperback]Like a lot of people, I want to play guitar, especially acoustic blues a la John Hurt, Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, etc., etc.Like a lot of people, I own a number of "How to play ..." books. But one thing I'm finally beginning to learn is that NO BOOK will teach you to play if you don't practice regularly.

Having said that, this book covers a range of traditional songs - Sugar Babe, Crow Jane, etc. - and some James' originals, which will increase your mastery of the instrument - IF you practice regularly. He starts with simple alternating bass, and progresses from there. At (what seems to me) appropriate times, he introduces hammer-ons and pull offs, and string dampening. If I can ever progress enough to the last few pieces, I'm pretty sure I'll sound pretty good.Heck, I already sound a LOT better than when I bought the book. (Although that's not really very much of a recommendation.)Certainly, I've had lots of fun trying to master each piece.

This isn't really a "first guitar book," but it IS a well considered introduction to acoustic blues guitar.I find the CD useful - it lets me hear where I want to go - and intimidating: I'll never sound THAT good. Also, it'd be nice to hear more than little snippets of the pieces - typically each piece rates a single verse.

I got this largely because I was so impressed with James' earlier book, Inside Blues Guitar - which doesn't teach you (or at least, me) about how to play as much as provides insight into the culture of blues guitar.Kind of a "Zen Mind, Beginners Mind" for the blues guitarist (or even us blues guitarist wannabes)."Roots and Blues Fingerstyle" IS a how-to and it does work.I can't say it's the best book of its type, or even that it's better than so-and-so's.I CAN say that if you're a beginner or somewhat above beginner guitarist, if you've got some self-discipline, and if you like country blues, you can have a lot of fun, improve your playing, and pick up some nice standards for your repetiore.

DVD-Mastering The Electric Bass Vol 1-Scales,Modes and their Applications Review

DVD-Mastering The Electric Bass Vol 1-Scales,Modes and their ApplicationsAlthough I never thought much about it, I was always interested in modal playing. I was sort of skeptical though, having never heard about David Gross before, but I still decided to try this product.

His simple, methodical approach is very much suited to my learning style. He demonstrates the use of each mode using the E major scale as a reference, showing the chords and arpeggios associated with each mode, and shows sample musical pieces in each one. Very useful.

One important factor with this video is that David slows and breaks down all his examples, so you are not lost trying to figure out what the heck he's doing. Anyone who has bought "instructional" videos before can testify that many of those guys out there basically show off their skills and lecture you without you having learned much, if anything. This guy is different in that area. Nothing fancy, pretty simplified, easy to digest.

The video gets four stars for David's good content focus and teaching approach. The split-screen shots of left and right hands is very useful as well. Good work, David!

Yeah Man!

Practice Trax for Guitar (Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Practice Trax for Guitar [Paperback]CONS: The jam trax are useful but they could have been improved by placing rhythm guitars on the CD panned hard right or left so they could be removed. I was hoping for just drums and bass to jam with.
Also, there was some variation in track key and style but overall the tempos and feel of the set of tracks was more similar than i would have preferred. To me it felt like the same improvisation style fit on too many different tracks. The chord progressions are generic (as required i guess). Most annoying to me was the tempos didn't vary enough for my taste. One solution is to get the Marantz PSD230 that can change the tempo of a CD without changing pitch and the pitch without changing tempo.
REQUEST: Maybe Danny Gill can put out style specific Jam Trax in the future !!? :-) I'd be willing to try them and i bet a lot of others would too.
PROS: It is still good for solitary practicing, convenient, and the recording had good sound quality. It's a good occasional alternative to a metronome. In defense of the author i think it would be difficult to put together a "be all, end all, emcompasses all jam track CD that pleases everyone". It could be that it just didn't suit my taste. If you want an beginner to intermediate level, upper mid tempo with lots of blues and minor pentatonic scale based stuff this might be just the thing for you. Plus it always shows up to practice!!

Guitar Signature Licks: Muddy Waters Review

Guitar Signature Licks: Muddy WatersStrange production this is.There's too much time showing full shots of the guy playing guitar, not an effective way of readingwhat the guy is playing. The best is when there's a close up of the slide on the neck.Duh.Shouldn't there be at least some explanation as to which strings are being used? The "instructor" seems to have more of an "I can play like Muddy, but don't expect me to show you how" attitude.Yea there's a little booklet, but if you don't know how to read tabs, you're even more confused. The production value is really lousy--looks like someone said, "I'll pay you a few bucks to sit here and play. We'll package it as an instruction video" with little thought as to whether you could really use this dvd.Yea, you'll pick up a few tricks, but it's pretty hard to watch it too many times because of all the stupid gab--"I have a picture of me when I was 18 trying to play this song."How many times can you sit through that one before you just say, I'd rather listen to Muddy and pick it up directly from the master.Lots of used copies available, and for good reason.

Arguably the heaviest bluesman ever, Muddy Waters literallyelectrified the Chicago blues world with the 1948 release of his first single on Chess Records ("I Can't Be Satisfied"). In this DVD, he shares the secrets of Muddy's solo guitar and ensemble work and covers slow blues, boogie blues, slide guitar and guitar bass lines in standard and open tunings. Beginning Electric Blues GuitarThis video is hard to follow.Sometime, usually during the easier parts,Tab is given

at other times...usually during the more difficult parts,no tab is shown.

Learn To Play Blues Guitar with a Flatpick Review

Learn To Play Blues Guitar with a FlatpickMany acoustic blues players play only fingerstyle guitar.

With this new release from [...], we have an excellent addition to the Homespun collection of music instruction as Adam Traum, son of Happy Traum, teaches acoustic blues with flatpick.

The instruction is presented clearly, and Adam builds slowly. His teaching, especially in the key of E, is very enjoyable, both for those still in the latter stages of beginner, as well as for the Intermediate guitarist. There are some special small tricks (including using the pick to hit two strings and bend) but the majority is sound, "line upon line" that has marked his father's teaching.

The video is of the same high quality that one would expect from Homespun.Clear, moving camera, close up, etc.Very well done.

Because I don't play electric guitar (at least for now), this is my first encounter with Adam's teaching. His demeanor is easy going and quite clear.Like any gifted teacher, he anticipates a student's challenges and will slow down and repeat.

I hope that Adam plans on many more acoustic guitar DVD releases in the future.

Country Swing-Back Up Guitar (2006) Review

Country Swing-Back Up Guitar60-minute DVD (with chord charts) - Originally released on video in 1992 (but now available on DVD in 2006), Nick Forster's "Country Swing Back-Up Guitar" is a straight-forward approach that demystifies the unique style for accompanying western swing or Texas fiddle tunes. Forster, of course, played electric bass in the ground-breaking bluegrass group, Hot Rize, while they were together from 1978-90. We were treated to his swinging guitar when the entertaining band's alter-ego group would appear from the back of their bus. When Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers would take the stage, Nick was known as Wendell Mercantile on the six-string.

The keys are to provide a moving bass line and to give the backup a percussive bounce by dampening the strings and eliminating or minimizing sustaining notes. Forster teaches some basic music theory about the notes that make up chords, how chords get their names, and how to make your own chords. Some charts come with the DVD. In the finest form of guitarists like Eldon Shamblin, Hank Garland or Jimmy River, a country swing chord progression is demonstrated at various tempos for the fiddle standard "Sally Goodin." The same progression in the key of E is taught. Chord shapes in the key of F are shown for their application to such songs as "Deep Water" and Bob Wills' "Brain Cloudy Blues" which almost entirely uses 7th and 9th chord voicings. It is important for guitarists to understand how to play in closed chord positions so they can be transferred to other keys on the fingerboard. With the addition of moving bass lines and the percussive effect from dampening strings, you'll be ready to win the accompanist award at the national old-time fiddlers contest in Weiser, Idaho. Guitar Signature Licks: T-Bone Walker Review

Guitar Signature Licks: T-Bone WalkerOk so Duke really turned me on to T-Bone.And Duke can really play. And now I want to play like that also but there's not enough tab or instructional break down to do that on this DVD.Yes Duke really captures the essence but doesn't convey how I might do the same. Camera shots could have been much better for helping do this and the tabulature could have much more extensive/complete.I'm glad I have it but it could have been much better for a teaching/learning tool.

Classic Rock Guitar Soloing - Barrett Tagliarino Review

Classic Rock Guitar Soloing - Barrett TagliarinoThis dvd was a letdown not only was it short but it lacked substance. This guy has a strange vibe and talks too much about solos being like conversations and that if you "talked all at once" you would not be heard.....really? wow thanks for the hot tip!.

There is little time spent on useful scales(other than the same old tripe) and current rock and blues solo structure is left out completely. He does play one or two recognizable licks like the solo from Rod Stewarts Maggie May but any second year player could do better than that. You would be far better of to learn from Danny Gill,Stuart Bull,Jammie Huphries or Greg Koch if you want real meat and taters.Look around first before you buy this Duck!!.

eMedia GuitarPro 5.1 Win/Mac Review

eMedia GuitarPro 5.1 Win/MacFor over 10 years now I have tabbed songs by ear, and frequently used many of the millions of tabs you can find online, however I would be doing them in whats called an ASCII (Ask ee) method, and i've been fine with that up until I recently discovered this AWESOME program.

ASCII for me now is a thing of the past now that I have discovered this program.

It's quick and easy to install. It works for both Windows and Mac systems.

So you open the program up, and you get a blank music sheet. Then all you simply have to do is click where you want to insert your note, and type it in, and use the arrows, and also use the many tools that come with it to create your songs.

It shows it in both tabliture, and music notation form whenever you insert your note into either of the two bars. So that is a great feature for those who read both tab and proper notation sheet music.

Once you have done your tab, and sorted out the tools for the notes. You can press a play button and it will play what you have tabbed out. So you can actually listen to it! A feature that will help improve so many players out there, and also help musicians to compose music.

And tho I sound like an infomercial, thats not all, you can also have multiple tracks. You can have as many guitar tracks as you want, bass tracks, percussion, even banjos, harmonicas, bagpipes... the (drum tab being tabbed out is not that of drum tabs tho)

All those tracks (separate paged tabs)will all play together at the same time when you hit play, or you can chose options to play them solo, or which one's you want to hear and don't with a simple S for solo, or M for mute option. Or neither to have them just play.

Also each track (tab page) is easily tunable. by default it is EADGBE but you can select from a heap of pre-set tunings, or just type in your own tuning. You can also have 4 to 7 strings for the tab notation, not just the standard 6.

There is also an extension for this program called Real Sound Engine (RSE) the G-pro is about 11 megs, but the RSE 300 or more meg add on is an option you might like. What it does is allows you to select what you wan't your instrument to sound like. So rather then it sound like a MIDI file during playback, you can have realistic guitars and effect sounds, bass, drums, etc... it does add so much life to your music. You can even then export your tab into wav form or midi, as well as some other audio forms.

The program even has great import options. You can import your old ASCII tabs straight into this program with the click of a button. It ignores all the |----| and just imports the numbers to the corresponding string.
You may just have to change the .txt extension to .tab if it fails for you. But I think it works both ways. If not, just open up word pad and save it as whatever.tab. And GP5 will open it no problems.

Not only that, it even allows you to import "Power Tabs" and various other forms of music.

I can't think of anything this program can not do already that I would wish for it to do. If someone had have said to me to give thoughts aboutwhat you would like to see in a tab editor, believe me, I could not have come up with an idea half as good as this program.

If you have not got this program, you don't know what you are missing out on.

Guitar Method: In the Style of Nirvana Review

Guitar Method: In the Style of NirvanaI bought this DVD beaucuse I really love Nirvana's music. However, it is a lousy instructional movie with low budget. From the picture quality to the clothes on the instructor is just plain - cheap. Curt Mitchell started off the DVD rambling on and on about Kurt Cobain for the first 5 mins, which does not have anything to do with Nirvana's guitar skills. The rest of the DVD just him played riffs after riffs. I doub other DVDs in this "Guitar Method" series worth any good either. DVD-Traditional Hawaiian Steel Guitar Review

DVD-Traditional Hawaiian Steel GuitarIf you are trying to learn Hawaiian steel guitar, this is the place to start. I've read 4 books and have two book/cd courses, but this Bob Brozman DVD is the best. Starting with a history of the steel, where I was amazed to learn some brand new things, he gives you the building blocks that I was yearning for - how to hold the steel, left hand position, how and when to pick and slide, how to tremelo, etc. Then he starts teaching you scales and harmony's in a way that finally makes it clear to me how the fretboard is put together, after 40 years of never understanding music theory but playing a mean rhythm guitar, I finally get it from him. I'm not into the songs yet, but once you get through course I'll be able to play anything and sound decent. It's an amazing experience!
