Herb Ellis:Swing Jazz Solo and Compin Review

Herb Ellis:Swing Jazz Solo and CompinI always wanted to take a Master Class with Herb Ellis my favorite jazz guitarist. And this DVD is as close to that as I'll ever get. In this DVD Herb Ellis reveals his "secret" to jazz soloing. The "secret" is he solos in 3 scales simultaneously! In other words, he likes to blend scales. That blew my mind. Herb explains how to blend the scales. I tried it and it works. Now I sound like Herb Ellis! The guy who said Herb Ellis is no Joe Pass is right. Herb Ellis is WAY BETTER than Joe Pass. If you wanna play like Joe Pass see a doctor. If you wanna play like Herb Ellis watch this DVD.

Modern Rock Guitar Soloing Review

Modern Rock Guitar SoloingThe title, "Modern Rock Guitar Soloing" is very misleading. The title should be "Modern Rock Rhythm Guitar", or "Modern Rock in Drop D". There are 11 chapters on this DVD and 9 of them deal with Drop D. I bought the DVD because I thought it would show something about soling in modern rock. Well it doesn't. The only thing it has is a section on octaves and one on unison bends. Other than that it deals with tuning in Drop D, power chords in Drop D, how to play open chords in Drop D, and how to drop the standard tuning down two steps to achieve a heavier sound. If you know how to play Drop D and you want to improve your solo, pass on this and get "Rock Discipline" by John Petrucci.

Peter Huttlinger: Arrangements for Solo Acoustic Guitar Review

Peter Huttlinger: Arrangements for Solo Acoustic GuitarPeter Huttlinger has technique, that's for sure. But I like none of his arrangements on this DVD. His style doesn't make me want to play like him. He plays very fast... but so what? To me, his music says nothing. It's empty. Homespun has another DVD entitled "Arrangements in Fingerstyle Guitar" with Muriel Anderson. It's far better than Peter's even though her playing on it sounds sloppy at times. It's not like her. She's usually a perfect guitarist. She must have been in a hurry to finish the filming.

Guitar Method: In the Style of Brian Setzer Review

Guitar Method: In the Style of Brian SetzerThis video is little more than a series of thirty-odd unconnected Setzer-style riffs. There is little on the overall style of Setzer, and there is not one section that covers an entire song.

The riffs presented are good enough - but the step by step parts could be slower.

This DVD has about as little production value as can be.

If you want to understand Setzer's stuff in a more comprehsensive fashion, get the Hot Licks video he did...

Getting the Sounds, Classic Rock Guitar Review

Getting the Sounds, Classic Rock GuitarBeen playing acoustic guitar for years and got heavy into electric. I thought it would be a good idea to invest in this particular instructional video to learn how to use FX Pedals, different guitars and amps, etc. WHAT I RECVD. INSTEAD was the instuctor Kenn Chipkin (Amazon says nick nolan?)looking like he just got out of bed from a wild night before - maybe even still "high" doing a VERY POOR JOB of trying to go through the different sounds of classic rock. I found the information to be VERY LIMITED and a TOTAL WASTE of my time. Do yourself a favor... LOOK ELSEWHERE for pedal effects & rock guitar sounds info because THIS video doesn't come close!! As always, THANKS for reading my reviews and be well. The WebbMan

Danny Gatton: Strictly Rhythm Guitar Review

Danny Gatton: Strictly Rhythm GuitarAnyone who is interested in learning the correct way to play rhythm guitar should look no further. The late great Danny Gatton was far above the musical plane that most mortals ever aspire, and here you can learn how to follow.

His lessons are as fine as crystal--very rarely does he loose the train except to make a cool point--and he has obviously thought them out well in advance as he did with everything that surrounded his playing. Danny uses his fantastic rhythm section consisting of an amazing drummer and a doghouse bass player that burns down the house while simultaneously helping Danny to get his points across. And if this isn't enough, Arlen Roth--another smoker--gets up and plays lead. He even has his guitar tech join in at the end of the DVD and trade leads with Arlen while Danny holds down the rhythm chores as steady as a sea anchor holds a boat during a storm. Pay close attention all you shredders who believe playing rhythm is passe, you may find yourself taking that long overdue lesson in rhythm playing.

The DVD format itself is well organized and the learner can take the lessons one episode at a time at both normal speed as well as at a snails pace. The instructional manual is also well anotated and helpfull.

If you want to learn how to play rhythm like a master do yourself a favor and buy this DVD. Spend the time letting this warm, humble, and funny man show you the way to play magnificent rhythm guitar. There aren't many that can play like Danny these days and sadly he is gone forever. Fortunately for us mortals, we have a few rare gems like this DVD to remember him by. This is one of the few instructional tools that doesn't treat the artist as a star rather it shows him surrounded by and working with other artists to create real music.

Buy this DVD and his telemaster DVD--Danny's intro capella is worth the price of admission alone. Then buy his 88 Elmira Street, Redneck Jazz, and Cruisin Deuces CD's. After living with and assimilating Danny's take on playing into your own style you may discover that you have a fresh and clearer perspective on playing our beloved instrument not to mention a fondness for one of the guitar's greatest players. This guy was THE REAL DEAL!

If you trust my opinion and work hard, and I am not mistakenly speaking out of my respect and fondness for one of history's greatest players and one of my greatest mentors, in a few short years the people in the audience will begin to ask how you learned to play such fantastic and magical rhythm guitar.

We, your dedicated students, miss you dearly Danny

Stu Hamm: Deeper Inside The Bass (2008) Review

Stu Hamm: Deeper Inside The BassThis seems to be the second part of two reissue DVD conversions from VHS tapes. That doesn't make them any less instructional, in fact they are much easier to navigate than tape, that's for sure.Stuart was the really first guy to popularise finger tapping, slapping, popping, flamenco rasque's, and general 'off-the-map' playing in that late 80's 90's period. As such this is a time capsule of what was leading edge at that time - and has not often been advanced since. 99% of bass players can't do this stuff (me included - and I teach) and there's a whole load of material here to extend what you can do with the bass in a band support role and in soloing. For the cost of one lesson these have a huge amount of content.

SongXpress: Classic Blues Guitar, Vol. 2 (1999) Review

SongXpress: Classic Blues Guitar, Vol. 2I had Vol. 1 of Classic Blues on VHS way back when it was just Songxpress.
The product on VHS was awesome! But I think in the DVDs vol.2 and vol.3, they edited a lot of quality material that was on VHS tapes.

The biggest dissappointment was on the final performance of DVD for vol.2 and vol. 3 of Classic Blues. They edited out the entire performance..only giving you half the performance. Very Sad.

On my old VHS tapes, i really enjoy playing along with their entire performances plus, you get to see Dan Warner perform solos in the songs..which I pick up by watching him play.

I am sad that the product is reduced to a mediocore product compared to the original VHS recordings.

Beginning Rock Lead Guitar for Electric and Acoustic Guitar by Dave Celentano Review

Beginning Rock Lead Guitar for Electric and Acoustic Guitar by Dave CelentanoThis guy is really a teacher. Despite I'm more an intermediate student than a beginner; I bought the first two Celentanos' DVDs (rhythm and lead guitar) for covering "holes" in my skills. That was a great idea; in both DVDs I learnt a lot of basics that I dint know. But the best part is that everything is showed in a clear way. I read on the Internet that Celentano went to GIT School and that hi was always trying to learn how to teach the instrument, well, se did.I have a lot of books of learning guitar but this the clearest one I ever saw.
Talking about the DVD and the booklet, the DVD is actually a VHS transferred to DVD, you can chose chapters and everything but the color is like a Super VHS tape (if you know what I mean).
About the booklet, it's definitely not fancy: the paper is really ordinary and also the print... but it doesn't matter I think. If you want to learn to play rock guitar, Celentano is the teacher.

I have ordered the Intermediate (rhythm and lead) DVDs this week. I will review they soon.

Mike Dowling : Uptown Blues Review

Mike Dowling : Uptown BluesIf your style is blues/swing/jazz with more than a touch of slide and alternate tuning, and you wish to move from intermediate to advanced playing, this will do the trick. But be under no illusions - to get the best out of these lessons, you have to practice.Mr Dowling is an experienced teacher as well as a great player. He makes no representations that there is an easy way to play this style of guitar.Whilst he walks you through the more difficult passages, he makes it clear that practice makes perfect.I venture to suggest that the companion book/cd is a must if you want to get the best out of these lessons. Also get Bottomlands and String Crazy and while you are at it, get a copy of Two of a Kind with Pat Donoghue. They are packed with great music, particularly Two of a Kind. This is not a Mike Dowling promo. It is just that if you are serious about extending you playing to emulate one of the finest players around, then the investment of less than $100 is small change. I am about half way through this, and already I notice it has taken my playing to a new level and to a greater understanding of this music. Unfortunately so many of the video lessons fall short. This delivers but it requires you do some work. Some of the playing takes some real effort - maybe it was me, but I needed some serious wood-shedding to get the 'In the Mood' roll under my fingers on Nitpickin', but was tickled pink when I did - in fact I used it with a bit of a twist when working through an impro of 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' with a pleasing result. What I appreciated best about this is that Mike takes the time to get the techniques down. This gives a solid grounding, whilst remaining interesting and challenging. The concert footage and camera angles are great.I will do an update on this when I have worked through it.I reckon that will take most of the winter, maybe more.By then I should be getting near to ready for one of Mike's camps or Wind River lessons - I've got the fly rod packed! This is highly recommended if you are a serious player and want to do the work.Mind you it is pretty good to have a Mike Dowling concert on tap as well!

Al Petteway continues his excellent lesson with five beautiful and evocative guitar instrumentals in the Celtic style. This time, he covers songs and effects that can be attained through a variety of tunings, including standard, dropped-D, open G and low C.
Al shows you how to create your own arrangements by finding the melody within the chord structure, then fleshing it out with pipe-like drone notes, chord substitutions, moving bass lines, the rhythmic "Scottish Snap" and other Celtic-sounding elements. Embellishment techniques_right hand rolls, hammers, pull-offs, etc._help you turn basic tunes into elegant guitar pieces.
You'll learn wonderful exercises for developing your right- and left-hand speed and dexterity, along with complete arrangements for five beautiful instrumentals: Fy to the Hills in the Morning (Johnny Cope), Light and Airy (a slip jig), the classic Sidh beag sidh mor, Red Haired Boy and Jock O'Hazeldean. Finally, Al pulls all the elements together with his Caledon Wood, a piece that incorporates everything he has taught on both volumes: right hand rhythm patterns, damping effects, harmonics, lyrical and percussive playing, and more.
These videos will give you invaluable insights into the music of one of the world's most accomplished fingerstyle soloists and accompanists. A natural and engaging teacher, Al's music features beautiful renderings of both traditional Irish and Scottish tunes as well as his own Celtic-inspired compositions.

Learn Blues Guitar With 6 Great Masters (DVD & Booklet) Review

Learn Blues Guitar With 6 Great MastersI could go all out and say that this DVD sucks if it hadn't been for Arlen Roth's attempt to take the time to explain in detail the technique of vibrato (Most videos move right past learning the art of that technique). The rest of the guys act like they were dragged into the studio after an all nighter to run off a few licks for the cameras to complete the "Blues Masters" line-up. The Lonnie Mack section was ridiculously short. Although I enjoyed seeing lessons by the original blues artists in this video, I would have much rather had the entire video been taught by either Ronny, Duke, Buddy or especially Arlen alone. This DVD is only 30mins and I have found many more in-depth videos that run at least 60-90 minutes that delve much deeper into technique and offer many more examples for the price or less.

Beginning Rock Rhythm Guitar Review

Beginning Rock Rhythm GuitarIf I was really a beginner and paid my hard earned money for this DVD I would cry, and it wouldn't be tears of joy.

First I should say that I really enjoy Troy's books. Our students have been using them with great success for many years. They are some of the most well thought out guitar method books with realistic examples, songs and band tracks that are on the market.Sadly, I cannot say the same for this Beginners Rock Rhythm Guitar DVD.

CONS:
1. This is perhaps the biggest short coming of this DVD:No insert or supplemental tracks on the DVD to help you follow any of the examples beyond the on-screen chord charts!Honestly how hard would it have been to add these things? If Hot Licks, Hal Leonard and others can do it why didn't Stetina and Co.?

2.Not enough time spent on "beginning" type material. While all of the examples are VERY cool sounding they get pretty advanced awfully quick. And to make it worse he "talks" you through some pretty lengthy examples and since they didn't include an insert/supplemental tracks (mentioned above) to follow, you will be rewinding A LOT!Not good pedagogy.

3.Only one speed --FAST.Yes you can probably slow the DVD down but again (sheez guys) just do two versions:first time slowly so a beginner can actually follow along, and then at regular speed.

4.Close-ups.There are some, mostly when Troy shows you how to finger a chord but not for many of the other techniques introduced.

PROS:
1.He does a pretty good (if not quick) overview of how to get clean, distorted and crunchy sounds from your amp.The guitar overview would have been even better if he had talked about volume/tone knobs etc....

2.The examples are creative, fun and realistic (like something you'd expect to hear real your favorite band play as opposed to those god awful MIDI-sounding rhythm tracks).

There's no doubt Troy is an accomplished guitarist. His playing is inspiring and his approach to the material is relaxed although very challenging for most true beginners. My 3 star rating is for those qualities. If you can hang in there long enough (or have a competent instructor help you through some of the trickier sections) this DVD will give you hours of material to work with. The shortcomings mentioned above kept me from giving this a more favorable rating.Unfortunately I don't yet have a better recommendation for a DVD covering this material.

Good Luck All!

UBXpress, An Introduction to Musical Styles For Electric Guitar Review

UBXpress, An Introduction to Musical Styles For Electric GuitarI'm a drummer looking to learn how to play guitar and thought that this DVD would be the perfect place to start.

The video started off on the right foot with the first instructor (I forget his name). He explained things in detail and with a bit of humor which I thought was cool because it offered a relaxed way of learning. Then he introduced his fellow instructor (I forget his name as well) and it went downhill from there because he took over the instruction.I felt that he was way too serious and rushed through the lessons considering this is a beginner video.I also felt that they should have placed the tabs on the screen throughout the lesson because as a beginner it's easy to forget them as you played along.

The two guys' personalities clashed and Mr. Serious often seemed annoyed by his sidekick's presence. You could feel the tension between them and I waited for them to thrown down the guitars and just beat the hell out of each other.

Had they stuck with instructor #1 I think it may have held my attention a little longer and I would have followed along past the hard rock section.Thankfully I watched this DVD as a rental and not as a purchase.

These are only my opinions, but I'd look elsewhere for a DVD to teach you the basic beginner stuff.
