Songxpress - Party Tunes for Guitar, Vol. 1 (1999) Review

Songxpress - Party Tunes for Guitar, Vol. 1When I started playing guitar about a year ago, I would play some simple chords here and there and although it started to sound clean, nothing I played in front of friends or family was recognizable as any particular song. This DVD changed that.
Within a short time I was able to master Twist and Shout and suddenly people started taking notice. The songs on this DVD are not complex... in fact, they only have a handful of chords, repeated over and over. This not only gives you the ability to keep up and play the songs, but as I learned... great repetition = great practice and confidence building.

DVD-A Guitarist's Guide To Better Practicing Review

DVD-A Guitarist's Guide To Better PracticingPete Huttlinger is not only a fingerstyle award winning guitarist, he is also a studio musician, performer (his CDs are wonderful) and toured with John Denver. This DVD simply is his practice motif --something that unlocks doors to better playing.I cannot see how a guitarist could not improve if he takes Pete's methods to heart. He not only presents scales, but very specific and strict manners to play them in order to improve finger strength. He is methodical, dedicated, and simply assumes that you have purchased this DVD to improve. He is not entertaining, though his personality is engaging, but very serious. This DVD is for the dedicated guitarist who wishes to improve without short cuts so that later, there will be no "holes" in his playing.I love this DVD and use it about once per week, as if it were a private lesson.I practice all week what Pete has taught, and then go back to the DVD 7 days later. It is my routine (I also use his DVDs learning the songs of John Denver) where I use several Homespun DVDs as my "teachers" with Pete's being like an athlete training. When I learned ice hockey, I enjoyed playing more than anything else. But the drills I did, over and over, were, eventually, put to use in games where I noticed dramatic improvement in a few short years.Pete's DVD is athletic training for the hands. You will be a better guitarist, in just a few months, if you dedicate yourself to practicing with a purpose....this is not about just picking up a guitar and practicing without a plan.

Get everything Homespun has to offer from Huttlinger, and pick up his CDs to increase not only your appreciation of fingerstyle guitar, but to relax and enjoy his music.

Product Description:
Peter Huttlinger's amazing guitar technique didn't just happen. He developed it over the years, enhanced by good practice and exercise regimens. As a guitar teacher with more than sixteen years experience, Pete knows that the most important thing that players need is guidance in their practicing routine. He has seen guitarists playing a piece for years, making the same mistakes over and over without knowing how to fix the problem.
Now, with this powerful lesson filled with invaluable advice and insider's tips, you can increase your guitar skills and perfect your playing style through proper practice routines. You'll learn how to isolate the problem phrases in a piece of music, use a metronome to build solid rhythm, increase your picking speed (flatpick or finger style), train your "muscle memory," and, perhaps most importantly, learn how to manage your practice time for sure results. Pete provides numerous scales and exercises to help you gain fingerboard knowledge, strengthen your fingers and develop right and left hand coordination. Finally, you'll put it all to practical use by learning to conquer a dazzling instrumental, "The Monaghan Jig," taking it apart phrase by phrase using Pete's practice method.
This is a lesson that will benefit all guitarists. Whatever level you are starting from, you'll see the quality of your playing grow by leaps and bounds, and you'll get more pleasure from your music making.

Brian Setzer: The Guitar of Brian Setzer Review

Brian Setzer: The Guitar of Brian SetzerI bought this with low expectations for guitar instruction.I just knew it would be entertaining to watch Brian jam up close and personal.Well, from a performance perspective this was great. From a guitar instruction perspective, it was better than expected. He spends a lot of time breaking down "Too Hip, Gotta Go" with detailed descriptions of his unique picking style. He doesn't go into too much detail about theory, such as how to substitute jazz chords. The only thing that bugged me was that this was obviously filmed during the swing revival of the early 90's, and Brian goes a little overboard with the "swing" and "bop" references. Also, this is a video that was recorded to VHS in the early 90's and has been converted to DVD.I've read some reviews that indicate the conversion quality isn't very good, but in my opinion the quality was excellent.I highly recommend this if you are a fan of rockabilly, early rock, swing, or just entertaining guitar playing.Even if you aren't a guitar player, this is entertaining enough for Brian Setzer fans to own anyway.

DVD-Lead Guitar Breaks For Bluegrass Songs Review

DVD-Lead Guitar Breaks For Bluegrass SongsThis product is for those looking to take solos on bluegrass songs in which a singer is being accompanied. It is not aimed at purely instrumental pieces. Steve emphasizes the melody of the songs in his solos and demonstrates licks, cross picking, and entire solos.

Product Description:
One of the most frequent questions we get is "What do I do when it's time to take a solo in a bluegrass song?" If you're ready to acquire all the skills needed to step out and take a break, Steve Kaufman's lesson is tailor-made for you!
Steve is joined by veteran singer and guitarist John Herald, best known for his work with the legendary band, the Greenbriar Boys, who lends his bluegrass vocals to six classic tunes. Their in-depth hour of performance and analysis prepares you to create your own distinctive guitar solos, tasteful rhythmic backups, and full arrangements to complement any bluegrass singer.
"Blue Ridge Mountain Blues" sets the stage for Steve's study method. As with each tune, he slows it down and takes it apart section-by-section, showing you how to find, arrange and embellish melodies while working off the tune's basic chord structure.
Steve covers a wide variety of picking devices -- licks, runs, rolls, endings, triplets, hammer-ons -- the true benchmark of an in-demand accompanist. In "Wabash Cannonball," perhaps the most famous "train song" in the bluegrass vault, Steve steps off the track to show you how to create an authentic "train whistle" guitar lick. He then mirrors John's vocal yodeling with stringed yodel licks in the evocative "Peach Picking Time In Georgia."
"East Virginia Blues" highlights essential crosspicking patterns, and Steve gives a detailed examination of its open strings and chordal repetitions. The duo's lovely rendition of the waltz; "Somebody Loves You, Darling" is an irresistible invitation to dig into the often misunderstood key of F. Steve spices up the standard I-IV-V progressions of "'Til The End Of The World Goes 'Round" with the break from "Ragtime Annie" before closing with a red-hot medley that's downright inspiring.
If you follow Steve's lead, your entire repertoire of guitar solos and arrangements will soon shine like well-polished gems!

Doug Smith - Contemporary Instrumental Guitar Review

Doug Smith - Contemporary Instrumental GuitarI bought this DVD hoping to learn at least some of the included songs. Doug Smith's performances are a pleasure to watch, and his detailed teaching on each piece is very helpful and enlightening. However (and this is a huge however), the publishers did not include a pdf file with the music/tab on the DVD. If the written music file was included, this would be a 5-star-plus, but even with Doug's excellent performance and teaching (including left and right-hand views), it will be very difficult to learn these songs without written music. I will now have to buy the book-CD with the sheet music for another $16.50...

Blues Rock Guitar Soloing DVD Review

Blues Rock Guitar Soloing DVDI have only watched this through once, but doubt I will watch it much more. Matt is certainly a good guitarist with a variety of skills, but I am not sure who this is aimed at. As perhaps an intermediate level, I am interested in soaking up as much detail as I can, but this left me high and dry.

There are certainly demonstrations of a lot of styles, but the tab and the slowed down demo is usually restricted to a bar or two. The close up of his pick hand is screen lower right - just where the camera has placed the fret hand. Sometimes one blocks the other. I have not seen this mistake on other DVDs.

On the positive side, the sections on phrasing are quite good (singing to rhythm and then putting it into notes), but not overly original.

All in all a disappointing and short DVD with tabs that are of limited value. At least it is not an expensive DVD. There is much better out there (I am working from TrueFire lessons at the moment).

Arlen Roths 150+ Acoustic Hot Licks For Rock, Blues, Country, Rockabilly, And R&B Guitar Review

Arlen Roths 150+ Acoustic Hot Licks For Rock, Blues, Country, Rockabilly, And R&B GuitarThis DVD showed me stuff I have been hearing on the acoustic guitar for years and never had the first clue how it was played. Everything is based around the pick n fingers technique which will certainly take a bit of practice if you've never tried it. A lot of the stuff is in a Bluegrass/country vein so you should be aware of that. It's all in the key of C A G E or D, which are the keys that a guitar works well for, and a lot of open strings are used in the licks. Thers no filler, no extended breaks for live performance inserts, it's just one lick after another. For me personally, at least 100-120 of them are "must learn".
The only downsides?? the tab booklet is sometimes a simplified version of what Arlen plays (and sometimes its just not quite right). Just watch the video, you can slow it down. Also, as other people have mentioned the sound quality IS a litte muffled but it's not really an issue. If you love the acoustic guitar you can't go wrong with this DVD.

Eric Johnson: The Fine Art of Guitar Review

Eric Johnson: The Fine Art of GuitarI got the DVD yesterday and had to watch it. Having previously watched Eric's first instructional video I was very curious about this one. This is certainly a MUST HAVE for all advanced Lead Guitar Players. This goes into a lot of detail about Eric's personal style. In Eric's first video he showed styles he liked to use in his playing etc...however this IS HIS style. Tons of examples on his way of doing arppegios, string skipping, he explains his tone, how he approaches song writing etc... I know I will be watching this DVD over and over again. The DVD comes with a booklet of examples. In addition, it provides you to slow-down every expercise by 50% and still keep the pitch. Great for exercise. Guys this is one of the best instructional DVDs I've owned...and believe me I have TONS. Definitely on top of my DVD stack! :-) MUST BUY NOW!!!

PS: "Total Electric Guitar" has the same cool features. I got both. My wife already ordered his latest DVD for "Father's Day" :-) Now I just need his Signature Fender Strat and ready to go. ;-)

DVD-Mastering The Electric Bass Vol 2-Further Mastery of Scales and Modes Review

DVD-Mastering The Electric Bass Vol 2-Further Mastery of Scales and ModesI purchased both of the dvds. Indeed a great product. It mainly addresses players with some basic understanding of scales. But then David Gross takes it to the next level. Accompanied by a quitarist and a drummer (very good jazz players, all of them) David shows all the scales and modes with ecery chord, arpegio and a bassline.

Next he shows 14 (if i remember well) prototype basslines that can accompany every major music style.

A great player and a great instructor indeed.

There is a little technique there as well, but the main focus is in theory.

Arlen Roth: Lap Steel Guitar (2009) Review

Arlen Roth: Lap Steel GuitarI just picked up a lap steel a few months ago on a whim. After playing guitar for 20 years, I'm really enjoying the instrument a whole lot. It's an awesome instrument to learn to play. The problem is, unless you want to play country or bluegrass, there isn't very many books or videos available to help you learn.I've investigated everything that's out there, and short of finding a rock/blues lap steel player to give you lessons this is the best.As he does with everything I've seen him in, Arlen Roth does a great job of teaching you the basics through cool, classic licks that just sound great. As with a lot of these old Hot Licks videos, not every example is notated in the booklet, but if you have a decent ear you can pick those licks up.And plenty of the great stuff he plays IS tabed out in the books. A great primer and definitely worth the money.

Songxpress Becoming A Better Lead Guitarist Review

Songxpress Becoming A Better Lead GuitaristThis series is truly amazing. So far I have purchased four of their products and can't cease to be amazed how easy these two guys make even more complex material sound.
I owe tons of guitar lesson videos, and often get frustrated going over them at one point or another, where the instructor is unable to explain the concepts in plain English or is too advanced to understand that some things obvious to him should be explained to the student.
The guys blended the theory, practice, and humor to achieve superior series that anyone can truly understand. Comparing to other products the quality of the DVD is very professional, and it contains a lot of bonus material (all for the relatively low price).
I wish there was a sixth star ;)

Guitar Player Sessions : Licks & Lessons from the World's Greatest Guitar Players and Teachers [Paperback] Review

Guitar Player Sessions : Licks & Lessons from the World's Greatest Guitar Players and Teachers [Paperback]I like this book because you get tips from a variety of players and some excellent examples of concepts/riffs that you can apply right away. More than just the written music itself, the book is helpful because it comes with a CD,decent editing of the musically notated examples and some analysis of what's going on. Personally, as a guy who has to be well-versed in a number of styles and technically proficient at everything from sweep picking, country bends, blues bends, turnarounds and jazz chord voicings to just stylistic concepts I found just about every segment to be useful. Incorporating all these things into my playing is another thing. Although it'll take any player a good amount of time to really work through these examples and make them his own, I can't help but want even more. There's plenty here to be sure, but a second volume would be welcomed...or fewer of the conceptual descriptionsthat don't have musical examples. I think it'd be helpful to write about how all these distinct players get their tones and use certain effects too. I definitely recommend it either way, just not for a beginner.
