Beginning Rock Lead Guitar DVD Review

Beginning Rock Lead Guitar DVDTroy is a virtuoso and an exceptional teacher. In this video Troy shows the basics in lead guitar that will allow you to go into intermediate material. It contains good explanations and demonstrations of basic technique (hammer-on & pull-off, bend, slide, finger vibrato, palm mute, artificial harmonics, alternate picking and more), scales (minor & major pentatonic, blues and dorian), key changes and blending modalities. And not only exercises but also three very short solos. It's very cool to see Troy showing how to use articulations to make licks come alive.
As you guess from the title, this is a DVD for beginners.
Publisher has released a short booklet (Beginning Rock Lead Guitar: English Edition) with transcription of the exercises from the DVD.

The Doors - Guitar Play-Along DVD Volume 13 Review

The Doors - Guitar Play-Along DVD Volume 13This is a good book to learn some of the Doors popular songs.Complete with various on screen views and a VERY good backing track.
This would have gotten 5 stars if it had used one of the optional views to break the songs into sections, rather than start to finish.
If you're not somewhat experienced, it can be tough to keep up with, and an additional book with tabulature will be a big help.
As for the play list, "Backdoor Man" was glaringly and painfully absent.
I would definately consider other books done like this one. It's the best I've found since the days of CD-ROM / Keith Wyatt instructionals from Play Mucic, Inc.

Getting the Sounds, Hot Nashville Guitar Review

Getting the Sounds, Hot Nashville GuitarSteve's a great player and his flawless execution of these fast solos is very inspiring! All of the solos sound great and are very worth learning.

I also like the inclusion of written notes and not guitar tab.(There are a few minor errors in the notation but Steve takes the licks slow enough to catch on to what he's doing even if the written notes are sometimes different from what one is hearing.)

I also like that there are not 100 solos and licks. The content is just enough to feel you've accomplished something.

Great DVD buy if you want to learn how to solo in the country style.

I'd welcome a another DVD by Steve showing even more tricks.

Melodic Lead Guitar: Soloing Strategies & Concepts With Tom Kolb (DVD) Review

Melodic Lead Guitar: Soloing Strategies & Concepts With Tom KolbI bought this DVD on a gamble that it might contain material I had not run across yet. There were no reviews, so I decided to write one.First, let me say that if I buy any of these music materials and glean at least a few new ideas, I consider the money well spent.
I was interested in modal music so I bought Tom Kolb's "Modes for Guitar," and "Soloing Strategies for Guitar."Both of these books I highly recommend as Tom covers a wide range of material. Some of the material is repeated verbatim from book to book and Tom is rather verbose in his explanations of various musical relationships, and some of the riff examples are so-so.However, he covers a lot of new ideas which I found valuable.
Well on to the DVD - "Melodic Lead Guitar."Tom goes through a variety of concepts - I especially liked his 'railroad tracks' Dorian scale, and the use of triads to spice up lead solos. The only bad thing about this DVD is that the editing is a little rough around the edges.Tom will say something like ' now we are going to try a certain example in another key' and then switch to a whole new concept. This occurs more than once on the DVD.However, I still recommend this DVD highly for the fresh concepts Tom covers.

Guitar Method: In the Style of Metallica - 40 Killer Riffs Review

Guitar Method: In the Style of Metallica - 40 Killer RiffsThis is the worst DVD I've ever seen by such a high margin it's ridiculous. It's some dumb metal head playing a riff, then playing it again in slow motion and not teaching you a single thing. The video quality is the worst I've ever seen on any video in my life and every segment begins with a huge line that rolls across the screen. The budget for the enitre thing must have been the cost of the metal head's lunch at McDonald's. I feel like I just threw $20 into a gutter.

DVD-Learn To Play Flamenco Guitar Review

DVD-Learn To Play Flamenco GuitarI've been playing flamenco for several years, but learned from instructors who were quite busy and could not spend a lot of time helping me refine my technique. The value of this DVD is that you can play the material over and over again until you have the rhythms down solid. I read music, but I find I really like seeing the left and right hand parts demonstrated separately -- another thing you can't really do with a live instructor. Aaron Gilmartin also clarifies some confusing aspects of Flamenco terminology -- something I wish I'd had in the early years of playing

Aaron goes into great detail on each rasguedo and rhythm, giving you everything you need to learn them perfectly. And his hints about playing and how each technique should feel are priceless. The melodic passages are very basic, but pleasant and reasonably interesting. But I'm after the rhythm, and I got it here.

I also have Juan Martin's "Solos Flamenco", but that book is too vague and moves too quickly to advanced material to be very rewarding. I did like some of the Martin's pieces, and enjoyed learning them, but I don't think his course really helped me improve my technique.

This is a great book for new flamenco players that already have some proficiency at classical guitar, but also valuable for intermediate students llike myself. A green beginner will get lost -- you've got to master fretboard and right-hand fundamentals before tackling the flamenco style.

Product Description:
The passion and fire of flamenco, with its driving dance rhythms and spectacular melodies, has inspired guitarists for generations. This Spanish Gypsy folk music has its roots in the Middle East, and you can hear strains of Arabic, Jewish, Eastern European, Indian and other ethnicities in its powerful rhythms and harmonies.
Aaron Gilmartin's clear, concise instructions will get you started playing flamenco guitar right away. All you'll need is a basic knowledge of the fingerboard and a nylon string guitar to learn this exciting musical tradition. Whether you now play classical, folk, blues or contemporary fingerstyle guitar, these DVDs will open a whole new world of music to you.
Along with flamenco history, terminology and technique, Aaron teaches four of the most important flamenco forms, each with its own recognizable "feel," or aire: Tangos, a dance rhythm in 4/4 similar to the sounds made popular by the Gypsy Kings; Alegrias, a lighter, more uplifting style; Bulerias, the exciting and popular form played by everyone from Sabicas to Paco de Lucia; and Soleares, the "mother of all flamenco forms." In each form you'll learn the basic compas (rhythmic feel), and become familiar with strumming and picking techniques such as the rasgueado, abanico and picado.
Throughout the two DVD lessons you'll develop your tone, rhythmic power, strumming variations and the improvisational melodies (falsetas) and heart-thumping rhythms that make flamenco so exciting to players and listeners alike.

DVD-Rory Block Teaches the Guitar of Robert Johnson Review

DVD-Rory Block Teaches the Guitar of Robert JohnsonAs always, Rory Block's teaching is clear and easy to follow. This Level 3 lesson is concerned with teaching riffs and slide techniques (in open G and open D tunings) that are used in the music of Robert Johnson.Of the three songs taught, only "If I Had Possession Over
Judgement Day" is taught at great length. The idea isn't so much to learn several songs by Robert Johnson, as it is to learn how Robert Johnson went about playing the guitar. The other two songs taught and performed are "Terraplane Blues" and "Preaching Blues".Rory also delves into how to approach the songs vocally.Well worth the money.

Brent Mason: Nashville Chops And Western Swing Guitar Review

Brent Mason: Nashville Chops And Western Swing GuitarBrent is one of the best! There's no doubt about it. He's not that great of a teacher though, so he kinda' rips through some of these cool (but tough!) licks without much explanation. When an instructional video requires the slow down feature for just about every lick --and believe me, many are like that!-- I get to thinking "how does this beat just transcribing this stuff by ear?"

So, in short, if you're already a competent player who's a Brent fan, you have to have this and do what you can to learn all the licks. But if you're new to the country guitar genre or a relatively inexperienced player, you'd do better to get one of the vids by Johnny Hiland or Arlen Roth since those guys are really good teachers as well as great players.

How to Play Blues Guitar Lesson Three (2006) Review

How to Play Blues Guitar Lesson ThreeThis is an excellent teaching DVD.

What is most impressive is Stefan Grossman's ability to teach.

Cleverly staying in one key at a time, Stefan patiently brings the student not simply a solid background of acoustic blues, but also of small "tricks" as he calls them. These "tricks" or short licks, hammers, pull offs, etc, are things taken for granted by Intermediate or Advanced players, but the type of little things that beginners listen to and marvel over.Stefan generously shares these little, and sometimes quite simple little manuevers that vastly improves the sound of the song.

Stefan also includes original recordings of the songs; some from as early as 1927, and has you listen to the original; sometimes more than one version, before hearing him play, and before breaking the song down for you.

The only negative is that the TAB (which includes all the lyrics) has graphics that are not the easist to read. But, I could not take away from the 5 stars for that.

I never knew of Stefan's music, which may be a plus in my case. I am able to view him simply as a teacher. There are a lot of instructional DVDs out there by talented players who are not talented teachers.Stefan's easygoing personality is a must. Why?In taking DVD lessons (which is my only source of instruction) you spend many hours "with" the instructor, as you repeat the lessons over and over.If the instructor's personality is not your 'cup of tea', you will find that you will learn less, as you subconciously pull away from the time spent.Conversely, when you enjoy the personality of the teacher, you are inclined to spend more time "with him" via DVD; subsequently, learning far more.

Such is the case with Grossman.Perhaps it is the age and wisdom that comes as the ego no longer seeks rock star adoration from people.I have had the unpleasant experience of sitting "before" an instructor who's talent is amazing, but who's love of himself is so over the top, that I ended up selling the DVDs...perhaps my own weakness, but in conversing with others, I find that others feel the same way.

Enjoy Grossman. He is not there to tell jokes, nor boast of his past accomplishments (Martin Guitar has built one in his honor, so not much else needs to be said).Enjoy the personality who seems eager to do one thing:share his love of acoustic blues.

Great series.

Beyond Basics: Fingerstyle Solo Guitar (DVD) Review

Beyond Basics: Fingerstyle Solo GuitarTwo months after picking up a guitar for the first time I finished Guitar for Dummies.A couple of weeks later I started on Beyond Basics: Fingerstyle Solo Guitar.I've been working on this DVD for about two months now, mostly on the first song: "Four per Bar", but have also finished the Travis picking in the appendices, and am a couple of weeks into "Key to the Kingdom".I've probably averaged one hour a day just on Four Per Bar for two months and I've probably another month until I can play it well.

There are a few disappointments in this DVD:The instructor gives just the facts and nothing more.He doesn't tell you why you should be prepared to spend six months or more learning his personal arrangements, which have pretty decent melodies, but not excellent. He doesn't give you any tips on how to play the song better, or anything about himself. There is no review of the goals of the DVD at the beginning or end, and seemingly no formal outline other than the DVD menu.I really liked the way Jon Chapel talked to you in Guitar for Dummies. He really understood his audience.

The DVD is copy protected so you can't have it on the hard-disk of your laptop or make a copy for your extra DVD player. You have to sit through the FBI warning and another Interpol warning every time it starts. When you put the DVD into your laptop an annoying advertisement pops up every time. And he is definitely marketing Taylor Guitars in this DVD, as he teaches his an entire song on a $300 Baby Taylor instead of his full sized $2000 Taylor.

This DVD may be a bit more than I was bargaining for at this stage of my learning but I am hooked and will not quit.I'm expecting it to take me another 6 months to finish, but at the end of that time I'll be a very good player for having less than a year of experience.Despite these few minor complaints I would definitely buy this DVD again.

Eric Johnson: Total Electric Guitar Review

Eric Johnson: Total Electric GuitarIf you're reading this review and have checked out the DVD details you no doubtedly know who Eric Johnson is and know that he is simply the most amazing guitarist living or dead.

Good news and bad news about this instructional video.Good news: this is the entire VHS copy (with an awesome transfer of video and audio) plus they broke out the lessons in normal and 1/2 speed which you can set (with the DVD menus) to repeat over and over until you figure it out and play it smoothly.Eric also does a great job explaining in detail what he wants to teach you while showing it.

Bad news: after attempting to play what Eric Johnson plays so effortlessly you may soon realize that you're not as good as you once thought you were!May make you want to quit and take up something like origami.Or, this DVD could make you want to practice twice as much and pick up the signature Eric Johnson Strat and try to achieve his clean, pure tone and playing style.

This DVD will show you his playing styles, how he gets his tone, lots of lessons on many styles of playing, we get to watch and listen to a couple of complete original songs (not found anywhere else), and watch Eric show lots of techniques he used on Ah Via Musicom (which hadn't been released when the tape was made) and Tones.

Eric is simply friggin' amazing and for the first time, you get to sit with him and have him explain the stuff that makes him unique.I highly suggest it to people who want to improve at playing guitar (all styles) as well as Eric Johnson fans who just appreciate his ability and want to see him in a private setting with just him solo with he strat.

Every time I see Eric Johnson play, I realize how much I have yet to learn.I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out with an instructional piano video as well after seeing his live acoustic tour a couple years ago.

Thanks Eric...you are amazing. And this video shows that.

SongXpress Classic Surf, Vol 1 (DVD) (1999) Review

SongXpress Classic Surf, Vol 1I can't believe this things has gotten ANY good reviews.
Okay, it's a decently made video, alright presentation, easy to pick up on the licks, the on-screen tablature is great...
BUT I never got past Misirlou (the first song on the tape) because... it's not Misirlou. The video instructs you to play the song in the wrong SCALE. If you listen to a Dick Dale recording of this song and then watch the tape, you will laugh yourself off your stool.
It's wrong. You can find a tab transcription book with this song and see for yourself that it's wrong.
[opening lick actual notes: bottom string 0,1,4,5,7,8,11,8,7 and on the video: 0,3,4,5,7,10,11,8]
Waste of ten bucks.

DVD-The Guitar Of Chris Smither Review

DVD-The Guitar Of Chris SmitherThis was purchased as a gift for a friend who already is wonderful flat-picker and was an admirer of Chris Smither. He expected a "and then I wrote... ..." and got a treasure of excellant information enabling an already good guitar player to move forward in style and technique.I only play the radio, so I'm going only on his very discerning opinion, and he rated it highly.

Product Description:
Chris Smither has made a terrific lesson for everyone interested in taking traditional blues guitar style and incorporating it into a contemporary setting. He has perfected the art of combining the fingerpicking he first learned from the music of Lightnin' Hopkins, Skip James, Brownie McGhee and other country blues masters with groove-driven original songs that are as current as today's news.
Chris takes apart some of his most requested songs, slowing them down and analysing his arrangements for the learning guitarist. Chock full of musical advice, clarity and good humor, this lesson will add powerful licks and interesting ideas to your song accompaniments and blues technique.
You1ll learn the bass-line shuffle groove of "Link of Chain," the sliding harmony figures of "Happier Blue" and a load of great riffs to pull them together (including Chris's trademark use of his feet for rhythm accompanyment). Moving into open D tuning, he gets deeply into "Hold On," with its bluesy vibrato, bends and hammer-ons, while Roly Salley's heart-wrenching "Killin' the Blues" (one of Chris's most requested covers) highlights his ballad accompaniment. Back to standard tuning, Chris takes apart the Skip James-type lick that's at the heart of "Can't Shake These Blues," and then closes with a Delta-style "The Devil's Real."

DVD-Jorma Kaukonen's Fingerpicking Guitar Method Review

DVD-Jorma Kaukonen's Fingerpicking Guitar MethodThis is absolutely the coolest DVD AND the best guitar instruction approach that I have tried, and I have tried a number of them. Jorma [and one of his buddies] play the song, then Jorma goes through step by step and show you how to play the tune. Thanks to DVD technology, you can easily backtrack at tough parts or stop and return later after your fingers recover. Thanks to Jorma, a rich tradition in guitar blues survives today with a significant following. I would not recommend this for beginners, but any 40-somethings or 50-somethings will be glad to know how to play these songs. [The guy who wrote the review below is total sour grapes with a vendetta.]

This is the ultimate course in Jorma Kaukonen's unique and influential blues and country guitar fingerpicking style, filled with invaluable wisdom, advice and techniques for learning pickers at all levels. Jorma gears this material to players who have little knowledge of the fingerpicking basics while skillfully engaging more experienced guitarists as well.
You'll learn five traditional and original songs, each one becoming a springboard for important musical information that will be applicable to any songs you want to play. Jorma teaches at a leisurely pace, taking care to point out all the possible variations that will enable you to make each song your own.
Reviewing the chord positions needed for each song, Jorma slows them down phrase-by-phrase so that almost anyone will be able to play the piece with a little practice. He discusses his alternate bass thumb work, and adds runs, bends, double-stops, bass walk-ups, blues licks, turnarounds, endings and ornamental notes to enhance your fingerpicking and blues arrangements.
In addition to the instructional material, these sessions feature a dynamic "live" performance of each song by Jorma and his touring partner Barry Mitterhoff. They include much-requested tunes "I'll Let You Know Before I Leave," "Trouble in Mind," "Tom Cat Blues," "Genesis" and "Vampire Women."

Greg Koch - Guitar Gristle Review

Greg Koch - Guitar GristleI'm a big fan of Greg Koch. He's very amusing (if a little over the top) and a terrific guitar player. I got this DVD to learn more about chicken pickin' and hybrid picking. He's goes through some very cool riffs at normal speed and slower, and also plays the longer song with his band. My only complaint is that there is no notation or tab included. Sometimes it takes (at least me) a really long time to figure out the notes he's playing because you have to watch the fingers, remember what he did, and then try it yourself. Definitely for intermediate players.
