DVD-Livingston Taylor's Excellent Guitar Lesson Review

DVD-Livingston Taylor's Excellent Guitar LessonFor fans of Liv Taylor like me, this tape is not only useful but delightful. Liv is definitely his own man and his engaging personal style--which can be a little out there, God bless our Liv--remains on this old tape, recently converted to DVD.

The main reason I bought this was to learn how to play a few of his songs. Liv actually has a lot of CDs out, going back to Vinyl LP days, but there is precious little TAB, songbooks, etc.; practically nothing. So the original compositions and arrangements he details on this DVD are a goldmine for us fanatics.

However, in at least two of the four--Going Round One More Time and Our Turn To Dance--he leaves out the bridges, at least on my copy. In Going Round one More time, it's just not there. In Our Turn To Dance, he's presenting the live as opposed to the produced CD version, which means he sings, without guitar accompaniament, the bridge. Not too many of us have the voice or the personality to carry that off--so it's disappointing. It's also worth noting that the version of Going Round One More Time, is the slower, more meditative one he does live, again, not the unequivocally upbeat version on CD. But it's a starkly beautiful version, without a doubt.

If I were really going to get picky I'd point out that in I Will Be In Love With You, he doesn't teach how to play the lower-key instrumental intro that's on the CD. However, absent that, which really isn't required for live performance, it's a complete song. I haven't yet gotten all the way through I Must Be Doing Something Right to comment.

He plays, but does not teach, the famed Olympic Guitar--but the booklet that comes with the DVD does have TAB and standard notation for it, along with the other songs.

With those caveats--and other considerations, including the fact that the brief, missing bridge in Going Round One More Time can probably be figured out pretty easily--I love love love it and I'm so grateful he converted it to DVD. The instruction he provides will bring to life many classic ringing Liv Taylor chords--it's a thrill to be able to play them, finally. On the practical side, it is MUCH easier to stop, "rewind" and replay the trickier fingerings on a DVD as compared to the VHS that was around when this product was first produced.

This is a poor review because I've left the best till last. Liv strongly, repeatedly, relentlessly emphasizes the importance of rhythm in guitar playing, and how everything depends on that. I've only been playing for about 28 years and I never fully appreciated this. He really drives the point home, and it's made "my" rendition of Going Round One More Time one of the best performances I've ever been capable of.

So hey Liv--thanks.

DVD-The Segovia Style-Classical Guitar Of The Maestro Review

DVD-The Segovia Style-Classical Guitar Of The MaestroThere are true gems to be mined in this instructional video from Eliot Fisk.Excellent insights into Segovia's approach to playing and his influence on the world of classical guitar. Some of the tips I enjoyed were the ones on arpeggios and vibrato. The only problem I have with Fisk's presentation is that he seems too focused on dazzling his viewers with his playing and not focused enough on bringing the viewer up to his level of proficiency. This video is not for beginning guitarists or even beginning classical guitarists. You need at least an intermediate skill level and probably an advanced one to benefit from it.If you simply want to watch one of Segovia's former students display the skills he learned from the maestro then you'll probably love it.

Product Description:
This instructional DVD takes us to the heart of the music of the great Andres Segovia. Eliot Fisk, a protege of Segovia and a master of classical guitar in his own right, has put together a lesson that is filled with invaluable advice and powerful insights into the timeless Segovia legacy.
Eliot Fisk's passion for teaching and his love for the music of "the Maestro" is apparent throughout this DVD, which is accessible to guitarists on all levels. He explores the music in great detail, focusing on interpretation, musicianship, guitar technique, and Segovia's place in the history of classical guitar. Eliot's energetic exposition is inspiring, and should be essential viewing for anyone interested in classical guitar.
Starting with an analysis of a Segovia transcription of the Bach "Prelude In D Minor," Eliot goes on to explore three of Segovia's remarkable "Canciones Populares" (classical guitar interpretations of beautiful folk melodies) and the haunting "Estudio Sin Luz" ("Study without Light"), written when Segovia was in danger of losing his eyesight. He includes tips on tone production, hand positions and other classical guitar techniques, as well as harmonizations and ideas on how to interpret the written music. Homepun Tapes' split-screen and close-up video techniques allow the student to study Eliot's hands in detail. As an added treat, Eliot performs lovely pieces by Haydn and Ponce, along with Segovia's work.
"Everything we do on classical guitar today harks back to the great Segovia," says Fisk, who was awarded "Best Classical Guitarist" by Guitar Player Magazine's Readers Poll. This video, taught by a formidable contemporary artist, is a rare opportunity to learn the technique and deep musicality that made Andres Segovia one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Chord-Melody Guitar: A Guide to Combining Chords and Melody to Create Solo Arrangements in Jazz and Pop Styles (Musicians Institute: Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Chord-Melody Guitar: A Guide to Combining Chords and Melody to Create Solo Arrangements in Jazz and Pop Styles [Paperback]I was fortunate enough to study Chord Melody electives with Bruce at GIT recently and this book covers the underlying skills to create nice chord movements.
Note that no Jazz standard complete chord melodies are included and emphasis is more on the chord part than the process of adapting a melody.
Some of the material here is part of the GIT Rhythm Level III core class, which Bruce also wrote and this book could also be used as a nice follow-on to 'Rhythm Guitar - The Complete Guide'.
The material is intermediate/advanced and Chapter 14 - More Chord Voicings contains plenty of fingerings I had never seen before, but which sound great if you can play them.
Since there is no 'Look inside' on Amazon yet I will list chapters; An overall fretboard view, Shells, Inversions, Harmonized scales, Chord scales, Slash chords, Harmonic moves, Voice leading, Cadences, Moving Lines, Substitution, Diminished chords, Chordal Interpretation, More Chord voicings.

Joe Walsh - Instructional DVD for Guitar Review

Joe Walsh - Instructional DVD for GuitarThis instructional video was originally released in 1992, two years before Joe Walsh went sober. It is painfully obvious in this video that he is slightly inebriated, which makes for an entertaining 47 minutes. My only complaint is the video consists of very very basic guitar instruction, spending far too much time on guitar setup and intonation. The only real insight one can digest is Joe's suggestions for different guitar tunings for slide guitar play. In between the setup and lesson segments we are treated to Joe Walsh playing snippets of his hits livewith his band. A little talkbox performance but no lessons on this I am afraid. It would have been nice if an advanced video had been released in the series, but this is all we have for now. Joe keeps you entertained through this with all his antics, it is worth one or two viewings. Buy it used if you can.

How to Play Blues Guitar Lesson Two Review

How to Play Blues Guitar Lesson Twothis review is the same as his Part 1.Part 2 and Part 3 continue with the same excellence, just change in key. This is a terrific 3 part series.

Never judge a book by its cover, right?I profess guilt in this as the cover of this series was not terribly impressive. What is impressive is Stefan Grossman's ability to teach.

Cleverly staying in one key at a time, Stefan patiently brings the student not simply a solid background of acoustic blues, but also of small "tricks" as he calls them. These "tricks" or short licks, hammers, pull offs, etc, are things taken for granted by Intermediate or Advanced players, but the type of little things that beginners listen to and marvel over.Stefan generously shares these little, and sometimes quite simple little manuevers that vastly improves the sound of the song.

Stefan also includes original recordings of the songs; some from as early as 1927, and has you listen to the original; sometimes more than one version, before hearing him play, and before breaking the song down for you.

The only negative is that the TAB (which includes all the lyrics) has graphics that are not the easist to read. But, I could not take away from the 5 stars for that.

I never knew of Stefan's music, which may be a plus in my case. I am able to view him simply as a teacher. There are a lot of instructional DVDs out there by talented players who are not talented teachers.Stefan's easygoing personality is a must. Why?In taking DVD lessons (which is my only source of instruction) you spend many hours "with" the instructor, as you repeat the lessons over and over.If the instructor's personality is not your 'cup of tea', you will find that you will learn less, as you subconciously pull away from the time spent.Conversely, when you enjoy the personality of the teacher, you are inclined to spend more time "with him" via DVD; subsequently, learning far more.

Such is the case with Grossman.Perhaps it is the age and wisdom that comes as the ego no longer seeks rock star adoration from people.I have had the unpleasant experience of sitting "before" an instructor who's talent is amazing, but who's love of himself is so over the top, that I ended up selling the DVDs...perhaps my own weakness, but in conversing with others, I find that others feel the same way.

Enjoy Grossman. He is not there to tell jokes, nor boast of his past accomplishments (Martin Guitar has built one in his honor, so not much else needs to be said).Enjoy the personality who seems eager to do one thing:share his love of acoustic blues.

Great series.

SongXpress: Going Solo, Vol. 1 - Basic Guitar Soloing Review

SongXpress: Going Solo, Vol. 1 - Basic Guitar Soloinghis series is truly amazing. So far I have purchased four of their products and can't cease to be amazed how easy these two guys make even more complex material sound.
I owe tons of guitar lesson videos, and often get frustrated going over them at one point or another, where the instructor is unable to explain the concepts in plain English or is too advanced to understand that some things obvious to him should be explained to the student.
The guys blended the theory, practice, and humor to achieve superior series that anyone can truly understand. Comparing to other products the quality of the DVD is very professional, and it contains a lot of bonus material (all for the relatively low price).
I wish there was a sixth star ;)

Guitar Lessons: Lead Guitar how to play guitar instructional video learning guitar lesson DVD (2005) Review

Guitar Lessons: Lead Guitar how to play guitar instructional video learning guitar lesson DVDI have to admit, this is the worst guitar instructional video I have ever had the displeasure of viewing.I am 41 and have been playing guitar for 30 years, and I occasionally buy instructional videos to get out of a rut. The instructor (Greg Douglass), albeit an OK guitarist 25 years ago, is almost lifeless and is unable to present the material.

The DVD shows a couple of crappy solos solely based on the minor pentatonic scale in a few positions. To make matters worse, the instructor has come up with his nomenclature for lead patterns like Gminor position in A which is confusing as hell.

Bottom Line: pure crap.I threw my DVD away, I would not wish this DVD on anyone.I apologize for being so negative, but I hate getting duked on material off Amazon that has a great description and pretty cover.

Here's a lesson for both classical musicians and fingerstyle guitarists who want to discover their "natural dexterity" for speed, tone and effortless technique! Whether you are a beginning or advanced guitarist, you will benefit from Fred Hand's in-depth exploration of the fundamental principles of classical guitar technique. "Your body and mind have an innate ability to express the music that you hear," says Hand, "you only need to tap into this source."
By learning the essentials of good playing, such as posture, relaxation, fingernail shaping and the correct application of the free stroke and rest stroke, you will quickly become a smoother and more efficient player. As you practice your arpeggios, scales, vibrato, trills and cross-string trills, you'll learn to apply them to beautiful classical-style pieces such as John Dowland's "Lady Hunnsden's Puffe" and a dance by Gaspar Sanz. Hand's own compositions, "A Celtic Tale," "Heartsong " and "Lesley's Song" are perfect examples of the application of classical techniques to pieces in a contemporary setting. This is a lesson that will dramatically improve the playing of both classical musicians and fingerstyle guitarists of other tradition.

Warren Haynes: Electric Blues & Slide Guitar Review

Warren Haynes: Electric Blues & Slide GuitarI may be prejudiced by my love of Allman Bros music, but I really think that this is one of the best of the Hot Licks series. In case you don't know, these videos are basically private lessons by the world's best players. What would you pay for a lesson from this guy? They are packed with great licks and techniques and a really personal outline of the player's philosophy of the instrument. I have about 10 of the VHS's.

Flatpicking Guitar Essentials Book/CD (String Letter Publishing) (Acoustic Guitar) (Acoustic Guitar Magazine's Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Flatpicking Guitar Essentials Book/CD [Paperback]The first few chapters of this book are very much at the beginner level. The Lester Flatt G run chapter felt like it was trying to pad a simple riff into a chapter. And the "boom-chick" rhythm chapters were a little bit repetative.
But then we get into the real meat of the book with fiddle contest accompaniment and all the chapters past that. This is where we seem some real insigt. There are some very nice chord substitution lessons. If you ever got sick and tired of playing thesame G and D chords over Salley Goodin (Or A and E7 since the version in the book is in the key of A) then you'll be happy to learn some very nice new chord sequences from that chapter. There's also some very nice Irish backup ideas.
Then we move into the flatpicking melody section. The fiddle tunes and cross-picking chapters in particular are quite good.At this point you're moving into intermediate to slightly advanced level techniques so be prepared to spend some practice time.
Normally, I can run through one of these String Letter "Essentials" books in a weekend. But this one has a bit more deapth than some of their other offerings. If you play acoustic guitar of any style, even if you're not a bluegras fan, I think you'll find something worth while in here.

Complete Guitar By Ear: 2 CD Relative Pitch Ear Training Course (By Ear Audio Method) [Audio CD] Review

Complete Guitar By Ear: 2 CD Relative Pitch Ear Training Course [Audio CD]There are 2 CDs in this package. The idea is to listen to them with guitar in hand and play along. Just like the title hints, "Complete Guitar By Ear" is taught completely by ear. There is no booklet or written materials that come with it.

I was never able to figure out my favorite songs on guitar until I bought this course. I was very skeptical when ordering "Complete Guiatr By Ear" because I had tried other ear training books and CDs in the past. This course was very different and it actually worked!

The first CD starts out very basic, which was helpful for me. The first few tracks have you playing along with a short range of notes on the first string. Then as you get more comfortable the narrator has you find notes on your own by playing along with the recording. Next the second string is introduced, you play along, find notes, then combine the first and second strings. This continues until you have learned to play notes by ear on all 6 strings. By the end of disc one you have learned every note, and every note combination on every string.

The second CD has a lot of more advanced ear training lessons. It took me about 4 weeks to complete disc one and two the first time. I started figuring out my favorite songs after 2 weeks of using these CDs. I've listened and played along with disc 2 dozens of times and as a result I can name intervals just by hearing them. Also, I've noticed that when I have my guitar and I'm listening to a song that my hand automatically goes to the notes being played on the radio.

Other ear training courses make ear training seem mystical or impossible. "Complete Guitar By Ear" is easy to use and understand from beginning to end. It has given me an entirely different understanding and appreciation of music.

Product Description:
2 CD Relative Pitch Ear Training Course. LEARN EVERY NOTE ON YOUR GUITAR COMPLETELY BY EAR! No written text or sheet music. Over 50 recorded lessons. A proven system that will help you develop a strong musical ear, finger strength, and an understanding of music theory for guitar. Just pop in the CDs and follow the lessons from your very first note to every note -on every fret -on every string of your guitar.
2 CDs Total running time: 1 hour 41 minutes.

COURSE LAYOUT
CD 1: Descriptive narration, beginner friendly, yet progressive. Starting with a short specified range of notes on the first string. A note is played and held while you match it on your guitar, (If you don't find it the first time, don't worry, eventually the narrator tells you what note is being played). The range of notes is progressively made larger, adding string after string, note combinations, and exercises. By the end of disc one the student has learned every note, and every note combination on every string of the guitar, plus some very essential music theory, and exercises for improving ones playing abilities.

CD 2: Less narration than disc one, and more music. Disc 2 can be used two different ways. 1. You can play along with CD 2 to improve finding the notes you hear as well as building your musical ear. 2. You can listen to CD 2 anytime, anywhere to help train your musical ear. For example: If you want to memorize the sound quality of a minor third interval, you can put track 4 on loop and listen to the exercises that are played on all strings up and down the fretboard. Do the same for any interval! In the end you will have learned to play every possible note combination on your guitar, as well as identify them when you here them played in songs.

DVD-The 12-String Guitar of Roger McGuinn Review

DVD-The 12-String Guitar of Roger McGuinnThis video is a great companion for your 12-string guitar. Before I bought my Ricky 370-12, I bought this DVD. Roger's technical demonstrations such as changing strings, and adjusting the truss rods are enlightening, making a seemingly daunting task less so. Even if you don't have a Ricky, the song lessons are useful on any 12-string guitar.
The lessons are well laid out, and the solos are played first at their regular tempo, and then slowed down for ease of learning. Roger's hybrid picking style is also explained here, but it isn't necessary to learn it to play these songs (I'm a flatpicker). The booklet accompanying this disc contains tablature for these as well, making this a fairly complete learning package.
The only thing I would ask for would be some audio backing (play-along) tracks to accompany these lessons, so you could play what you've learned with a "band". However, the lack of these in no way detracts from my enjoyment of it, and I recommend this DVD very highly.
