Chord Tone Soloing: A Guitarist's Guide to Melodic Improvising in Any Style (Musicians Institute: Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Chord Tone Soloing: A Guitarist's Guide to Melodic Improvising in Any Style [Paperback]Barrett Tagliarino books are easy to follow. This one uses a format similar to his Fretboard Workbook. Ideas are introduced with easy to read chord diagrams that revolve around the CAGED system of chord organization. Chord tones are emphasized as one solos. This outlines the chord progression making the soloist sound "melodic," instead of simply playing the right scale over chords.

This book expects the reader to be new to soloing and progresses in baby steps. The other book on the same subject by Berklee Press called "Melodic Improvisation" is much more advanced and focuses on heavy weight jazzers like Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and monster players of that caliber. This book is accessible to rock, folk, bluegrass, and country guitarists, not just jazz cats. The secret to success, the point of the book, is to target chord tones as one solos, but how does one do that?

To answer that question, Barrett provides in depth guitar theory, a lot of break down and analysis, scalar choices, key center analysis, and a lot of down home humor along the way to keep things from getting overwhelming. All-in-all, Tagliarino has written another instructional book you'll want to keep in the library for continued study.

Guitar Basics: Essential Chords, Scales, Rhythms and Theory (Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Guitar Basics: Essential Chords, Scales, Rhythms and Theory [Paperback]I've been fiddling with the guitar for years now, without making any progress. It's tough being married, with kids, a job, and other hobbies to get serious with lessons and everything.I found this book gives enough direction to make real progress in short practice sections. The steps are deceptively simple; you'll learn a principle, and then you'll be responsible to practice it until it's right.

Even with just a little time I'm filling in a lot of gaps in my playing.I'm learning open chords I ignored before.I'm getting much better at my transitions. My fingers are getting stronger. In just a few weeks, I've advanced more than in many years of goofing around. This book is well worth the price.

50 Licks Country Style DVD Review

50 Licks Country Style DVDI've been playing for many years and consider myself a solid intermediate or even advanced player, but none of these licks are overly difficult. These are a great place to enhance your ability with a lot of the basics. As a comparison, I've also have Brent Mason's dvd, but you need additional fingers to play his stuff! These 50 licks are more for the average player looking to improve, not the already hot guitarist looking for some really hot licks.

Well worth the $15 or less.Make sure you get the "booklet" if you buy used, the tab is only printed not in the video.

25 Great Blues Guitar Solos: Transcriptions * Lessons * Bios * Photos [Paperback]First off I do not give 5 stars to every book I have.I am actually quite picky and bought this on a whim. That being said it is a very good book with lots of different styles to play with. You will learn something and enjoy it because it is well laid out and actually has a few suprises along the way.Biggest plus...it's without a doubt not boring after playing a few times. You could actually become very good just playing this book over and over for improvisation purposes.

Acoustic Guitar Soloing Review

Acoustic Guitar SoloingThis DVD is definitely intermediate level stuff. He starts with a quick review of the 5 basic scale patterns, pentatonic, blues, and diatonic, plus the related chords. If you've read Fretboard Logic this will be familiar. Then a quick review of which scales go with which chords. Nice. Then arpeggios and how to use them. Also nice. Then he puts theory in action by teaching some very nice country and blues licks, then some Brazilian and a pop tune with altered chords.Just a very pleasant DVD, full of good info and nice tunes. Mr Findlay has a very breezy teaching style. The licks work on electric guitar as well. Lots of info in a short time. One of the best guitar teaching DVDs I've seen. And the price is right.

Fingerstyle Guitar Essentials Book/CD (String Letter Publishing) (Acoustic Guitar) (Acoustic Guitar Magazine's Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Fingerstyle Guitar Essentials Book/CD [Paperback]If you're just learning fingerstyle guitar then this is quite a good book for you.The various teachers cover various techniques, tunings, and musical styles. The CD is very helpful (which is typical for this publisher) because every phrase, every song is played first at a slow speed, and then up to tempo.
The songs taught in the book are quite nice, I even changed my own arrangement of "If I Only Had A Brain" to incorporate several of the ideas in the arrangement in this book.
But overall, the material is a bit light.Again, if you're new to the technique of fingerstyle guitar then you'll probably enjoy it.And if you've been playing a few years it's still a fun book to just start at the beginning and work your way through. But there's not a huge amount of material here.
Still, it's a fun book.At this price it's probably worth getting just for the fun of learning everything in the book in a weekend.

The Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method Book/2 CDs (String Letter Publishing) (Acoustic Guitar) (Acoustic Guitar Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

The Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method Book/2 CDs [Paperback]I bought this book to get me more into fingerpicking. I m not a beginner and learned to fingerpick a little back in the late 1960's / early 1970's but wasn't really into it. I was more into stuff like Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer etc, and never developed beyond a rudimentary skill in fingerpicking.
This book was great for me and gave me a well laid out plan to follow using usable songs which allowed me to develop a skill I needed.
If you're willing to do the time, get this book. It's not about loving every song or example, it's about learning a skill.

Guitar Lessons: Learning Guitar Step 1 - How to play guitar instructional video (2005) Review

Guitar Lessons: Learning Guitar Step 1 - How to play guitar instructional videoI just picked this dvd up for my son who wanted to learn how to play guitar

I liked this dvd better than another one we bought him because this one is geared for beginners who are just starting on the guitar and the last tape we got seemed to rush through the exercises to fast and would probably be better for an intermediate player

I also liked the on screen chord chart that he can sit and go through on his own pace until he understands the fingerings a little better.

I can also go to their site and download and print out every thing the instructor talked about in the lessons.

If you are someone or know someone looking to learn the guitar and have little or no previous training, I would recommend this dvd.

First Lessons for Guitar, Vol. 1 (Las Primeras Lecciones de Guitarra) [Sheet music] Review

First Lessons for Guitar, Vol. 1 [Sheet music]If you want to learn to sight read music onto the guitar, this is probably the easiest, most enjoyable method ever written.

I've been a professional guitar teacher for 22 years. Every student I know who has completed this book has become a competent guitarist and a decent sight reader. All of them.

This book used to cost a small fortune in North America due to a copyright issue so it wasn't widely distributed. Now that the copyright issue has been resolved, there is no reason not to get it.Even for advanced players, the pieces are pleasant to read through, so you will never go wrong giving it as a gift.

The Ricordi Americana edition pictured here includes solfege syllables for the 1st 36 studies, so it is useful for ear training too (the Mel Bay edition does not) The Spanish/English bilingual text is a nice touch for students learning Spanish, and provides a sense of heritage for students of Latin descent.

Sagreras Las Primeras Lecciones is on a par with other great guitar methods like Carcassi, Giuliani, Sor, and Tarrega. In 100 years, people will still be using this wonderful little book. It's rare that something this good is this affordable.

Muchos gracias maestro Sagreras!

Guitar Theory Basics Review

Guitar Theory BasicsThe fact is that, unless you're a punk rocker (3 chord rock), one cannot arrange varied/weaving (interesting) music without basic music theory knowledge. One must understand what the "major scale" is, how it relates to chords and, ultimately, "modulating" to chord progressions in different keys.Without this knowledge, music is a dead-end street.

I've tried other theory learning materials and all of them were confusing by iether a lack of restraint and/or organization.Guitar Theory Basics is just that: the basics...taught in a simple, linear fashion that works. Even I, with a doctor diagnosed case of ADD, absorbed all the information on this disk.

It has on-screen tablature, so there no need to fetch en extra booklet and being able to read music notation isn't necessary. Just pop the DVD in and learn.

Modes for Guitar (Private Lessons) [Paperback] Review

Modes for Guitar [Paperback]I bought this book about 2 years ago. I really liked it. It was extremely useful when I was first learning about each of the major modes. That said, it focuses mostly on the application of the modes, although there is a rather brief introductory chapter on "The Theory of the Modes." Each major mode is covered in detail in it's own chapter, which includes:

-Harmony, matching chord types, and pattern shapes.
-Description of the mode's "character," what gives it that character, and common usages of the mode.
-7 to 10 licks, riffs, and solos illustrating and explaining different applications of the mode, all on accompanying CD and all in both tab and standard notation.
-A jam track for improvising over in that mode (on CD).

It also contains a chapter on "Other Modes," where it briefly touches upon melodic & harmonic minor, the blues scale, and a couple modes of each (like the Altered scale, Phrygian dominant, and the Bluegrass scale). It's somewhat helpful.

One final note: while the examples are not overly technical (for example, no shredding), some of them might be a bit daunting to those who haven't been playing very long. But with a bit of practice anyone could probably get them down. All in all, this was a great book for me, and I recommend it to anyone who's want to be able to do more with the modes. It answers that question, "Okay, so now I know what modes are, but how do I actually use them?"

He also covers: melodic minor, harmonic minor and the blues scale; soloing over diatonic and modal progressions; superimposing modes; patterns, progressions, licks; and much more. Guitar Lessons: Flamenco Made Easy Learn How to play Flamenco guitar instructional video Review

Guitar Lessons: Flamenco Made Easy Learn How to play Flamenco guitar instructional videoCharles Sedlak is not what you'd call a pedantic music instructor. He's more like Arlo Guthrie showing you some licks in the back room after a set at the Berkeley Cafe. In this DVD Sedlak assumes you have the basics of the guitar figured out and just want to sound like a flamenco guitarist. He doesn't dwell on the musical tradition behind flamenco, spend time teaching you all the forms, or hold forth on the nuances of technique.

He just shows you how to get the flamenco sound, while informally teachingyou some cool sounding but easy to play pieces. And sometimes that's all you want. Formal flamenco studies are slow going. Sedlak gets you to the payoff quickly, so you can sound like you halfway could actually BE a flamenco player, with just a few weeks of consistent practice.

There is much, much more to flamenco than Sedlak presents in this video course. But you're more likely to stay motivated with this material, especially if you're a begninning flamenco player, than if you take the long road of the flamenco purist. Even intermediate players will find some nifty secrets to add flair to their playing. And in contrast to the sometimes stupefying cadence of other flamenco teachers, Charles, with his long hair and wavy eyes, is wonderfully entertaining.

Guitar Total Scales Techniques and Applications: Lessons for Beginner through Professional [Paperback] Review

Guitar Total Scales Techniques and Applications: Lessons for Beginner through Professional [Paperback]Well, I bought this book when I was just starting and when I opened It seemed to me so hard. Well, I decided not to leave it behind and I started to practice. I can tell that the information in the first 30 pages will keep you busy for so long time. Mastering just the first scales and their applications will teach your left hand how to travel up and down the neck of your guitar. I still use those first applications to warm up. As I'm still more related with acoustic guitar, some applications (like hammering) I can say are not so useful, but, with the electric guitar, are incredible. Take this book, a lot of patience, hard work and you'll see results.

The Acoustic Guitar Method Review

The Acoustic Guitar MethodThis two disc set is like a complete 6 month course in guitar. For the price of, perhaps, a single lesson, you get what amounts to 6 months of lessons from a low-key, funny, and talented teacher.
The first disc is useful for those just starting out.If you do not know how to play chords, learn a chord, turn off the DVD (even after only 15 minutes) and practice. In a few days of practicing, turn the DVD back on and go for 'lesson 2", or the next chord.

If you are, like me, someone who has been playing for awhile and is self-taught, take the entire course.Do not skip much in disc 1 even though disc 2 is more appealing.Get the basic strums, bass patterns, etc.Find out, like me, if you have "holes" in your guitar education and fill them.In other words, use this wonderful 2 DVD set to build a solid foundation, and then, after mastering Disc 2, move on to other Homespun DVD's, expanding your education, while learning to play songs.

This is what most excites me:I get to firm up my foundation, learn techniques, but also learn songs as I go along. After all, it is the songs that we enjoy playing the most.

In this set, you get all 3.

Throughout the lessons you'll learn to play more than two-dozen classic songs drawn from blues, folk, country and bluegrass traditions, including Careless Love, Columbus Stockade, Darling Corey, In the Pines, Scarborough Fair, Man of Constant Sorrow, Stagolee, Hot Corn Cold Corn, East Virginia, House of the Rising Sun, Banks of the Ohio, The Crawdad Song, The Girl I Left Behind Me, Gambler's Blues and many others.
Bonus: A four-song play-along session with guitarists Happy Traum and David Hamburger gives you a chance to practice your newly learned flatpicking instrumentals.
